    Typical Bank

Vice President (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsThere are many departments to seek other opportunities.

ConsMany of the departments have the Dept Head in Toronto. Many Canadians come here for better positions, but no opportunity for Americans to further career in Toronto

Advice to Senior ManagementPensions are good, But some of the employees are there strictly for the pensions, need some new blood.

    Very disappointing

    Analyst (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsThe benefits and holiday packages are good. The vacation package was good but policy changed this year for new employees decreasing this benefit.

ConsPromotions are entirely based upon how long you have worked at the company and who you know.
Promotions are not in any way based upon your abilities or hard work. There is absolutely no training program of any sort for the employees. Technology is extremely old and obsolete, I was using virtually the same software/equipment 20 years ago in another bank.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a lot of deadwood that must be cleared in middle management. Many of the managers I have encountered are extremely resistant to change and have no people skills.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

    Misleading

Administrative Specialist (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsHoliday package is one of the best, but then again bank holidays are great to have for days off.

ConsManagement is all about who you know for jobs

Advice to Senior ManagementIt'snot about who you kno, it about the person getting the job done.

Generally a good atmosphere with good benefits.

Service Representative (Former Employee) Arlington Heights, IL

ProsOne of the major benefits to working at Harris Bank is their benefits package and work done for the community.

ConsA very disappointing part of working there was that the technology is outdated. There's more advanced systems out there that could make work more efficient.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore acknowledgment of achievements and better coaching. Also, the training process could further be streamlined by providing more hands on one-on-one coaching.

BMO Harris is a great company - just avoid the Small Business segment

Small Business (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsGreat history, great name, best customer service in the industry, and some of the best employees in the industry as well to work with.

ConsAll companies are political, however Harris is beyond ridiculous in determining who gets promoted and who gets raises. We promote middle management on a basis of how well you know your boss and how unlikely you will be to be able to take their position over.

The Small Business segment in particular is losing people at an alarming rate for a newer program and with pay so poor for back office and front line personnel, top people and managers will be the next to start leaving. Small Business executive has almost no leadership ability and pays based on experience as opposed to proven results. No matter whether you are at the top or the bottom, your bonus seems to be the same.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay for performance, otherwise risk losing top people and good managers. Small business currently rewards mediocrity while holding no reward for high performance.

The Company Does not have a Clear Vision

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

    ProsLarge Company
    Great Benefits
    Advancement Opportunities
    Several Locations
    Nice Red Marketing

ConsTo many changes at once without clear direction
    No Work Life Balance
Merit promotions due to worth not years
Human Resources has to honor and respect FMLA, Age and Honesty with employees

Advice to Senior ManagementStreamline the vision of the organization
Revisit at Human Resource to verify they are adhering to policies (EEOC).
When management asks for honesty, expect honesty and do not hold it against the employee

    Alright for now.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsGood work - life balance allowed, good health, vision, pension and other benefits, solid and stable company, opportunities for professional development

ConsVery politically charged, compensation is not in line with the industry, is 100% subsidiary of Canadian Bank and it feels this way.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecrease level of office politics on all levels. Improve compensation rate to be in line with the market, other than that mostly OK.
