ProsHarris has good benefits and the 9/80 is quite convenient.

ConsThe treasury department is a horrible place to work. Management in all departments do not support you in growth. Harris is only hiring new grads and letting all their older workers go.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to accept that people sometimes want more for their careers

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Poor employee experience

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Rochester, NY

ProsThe products serve our military, firefighters, and police. Knowing we make a difference in protecting them is very rewarding.

ConsNo pay raises in years. Health care benefits cut and cost increased. Holiday schedule changed, less time off. Very slow to accrue vacation, have to be there 10 years to get an additional week. Mid management in engineering is very poor to the point of being ineffective and useless. Corporate management is only interested ii the shareholders.

    Good.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFair compensation, good benefits, some real talent in secondary leadership positions.

ConsRequirements of contracts are often changed, and when that happens, sometimes your positions disappears. In the current sequestration crisis, and belt-tightening in Washington, D.C., management has tended to staff contracts with entry-to-mid level individuals, and it is difficult to find a senior position.

Advice to Senior ManagementConcentrate on finding outstanding individuals for secondary leadership positions. If you have a dud leading a team, everyone is miserable and productivity falls.

Not as great as it used to be, but still a nice place to work

    Software Engineer III (Current Employee)
    Melbourne, FL

ProsEngineers at Harris are great people- I've only worked with one person I didn't like, and that person left the company soon afterward. You're given the opportunity to move around and most engineering managers are open and easy to talk to. They're building a lot of new infrastructure, both physical and in their business, that I think will serve them well for the years to come.

ConsBeing a government contractor, they have some unavoidable pitfalls. Requirements are passed down from government brass and Harris's engineers don't have a whole lot of opportunity to challenge them. Also, though Harris is trying to diversify into more commercial markets, most of Harris's business is tied to the US government and it's ups and downs.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe recent decline of the benefits packages are wearing on employees. Harris has always claimed to have some of the best benefits in the business, but that isn't so true anymore.

    Excellent place to work.

    Software Engineer IV (Current Employee)
    Rochester, NY

ProsProjects are exciting and there are many to do. Pay is very good and hard work can lead to promotion. Good benefits wih occasional work at home policy when needed.

ConsRedundancies in competing product lines are frustrating and recent engineering outsourcing strategies are very concerning.

Advice to Senior ManagementClear the lines between product management and engineering. Engineering decides how products are built and product management has final say in what the product should have.

    Was great now sadly not

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe people are passionate about their work and their customer's mission. The 9/80 schedule provides work life balance and Melbourne, Fl is a nice place to live and work. Three years ago this review would have been very positive; it
used to be a great place to work.

ConsThe new CEO is focused on changing the culture to focus solely on cost cutting to enhance the stock price with no regard for the people. Low merit increases, increased benefit costs while looking at ways to reduce offerings. They do not invest in their people.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a lack of confidence and trust in the CEO and his leadership team; questionable ethics. There is no strategic vision other than to cutting costs to show a profit. They should expect and plan on high turnover within the next 9 months.

    Systems Engineer

    Systems Engineer II (Current Employee)

ProsAs an Implementation Systems Engineer be prepared to travel quite a bit. Good place to work if you like to travel all of the time.

ConsThe compensation for an Implementation Systems Engineer is good, unless when you are required to work 60+ hour weeks without getting any overtime compensation.

Harris - Decent for new grads, not good for mid career

    PFA (Former Employee)

ProsThere is good job stability here.

ConsNon-competitive salary, especially for those in mid career. Raises are less than 2% annually for the majority of employees. A once competitive benefits package is a shell of what it once was. The office culture was draining.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
