Pros
The people at Harris are the best reason to work here. Everyone is incredibly friendly and willing to help get the job done. The benefits are excellent at this company, and the location can't be beat.
Cons
The yearly review process is awful. It's tedious, the software used is flaky at best, and the results are biased. It is incredibly difficult to judge people who do completely different jobs, so I will give management a little lee-way, however we should not limit high performers to 10%. If someone is a high performer, they deserve to be rated that way, not just if they make the 10% cut. I understand the money and how to distribute that, but the wording on the review and the way the promotion handbook is laid out causes issues with top 10%. The work seems to be cyclical and not consistent. Finding a good team and continuing to work with that same team is difficult since the company is so large.
Advice to Senior Management
Communication has improved over the last few years, which is great. However, there is still great room for improvement for getting the young employees at Harris the opportunity to grow and advance quickly within the company.
Pros
Reasonable Pay - That's about it.
Cons
Most unethical Management company i have Ever experienced. Documented lies in which they communicated Intentions about Plans for Divisions or their philosophy to Invest in New Technology Went by the wayside within months of Not in One but in several indepent cases.
Incredibly Short Term, Wall Street driven quarterly thinking!
Alot of arrogante due to the war driven growth of the last Years. As this Cycle Comestibles to an end it will Be interesting and certainly painful to See how much worse this Company will Start treating its employees....
Advice to Senior Management
Get a backbone and stay the Course on your Investment decisions otherwise Watch Technology Edge dissapear and the Company crumble.
Pros
laid back , easy to work at , good people , not hard work
Cons
very disoganized , no real direction, change control was not existant
Advice to Senior Management
more meetings , more tasking to engineers , better change control . better financial organization .
Pros
The people that work there are for the most part really dedicated to doing a good job and work very hard. The benefits are very good and the pay is fairly good as well.
Cons
Way too many changes with executive leadership. The direction of the company changes every 6 months due to this. They are very short sighted and truly are only concerned about the short term for investors. Working for a public company can be very challenging.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop changing your teams and direction every 6 months. Your team members are becoming very frustrated.
Pros
Good exposure to video networking products.
People are very helpful.
Management is very considerate in giving time off when it is necessary.
Cons
Lack of coordination between different divisions within Harris.
Advice to Senior Management
Make recruitments for interns and coop as per the schools calender.
Pros
Harris has the benefit of good location in central florida near the east coast beach. The benefits are outstanding. They pay up to 3 degrees 100%.
Cons
Harris tends to give small raises and increases unless you are getting a promotion. The offices are boring with little decoration. There's very little visibility between programs. No one knows the name of your company unless they're also a defense contractor.
Advice to Senior Management
Need more employee get togethers to improve visibility.
Pros
Freedom, Responsibilities, great co-workers, good pay. They have plenty of different areas of technology that you can branch off into and you are not pigeon holed. Also there are opportunities for security clearances.
Cons
Long days since you work 9 hour days
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure you promote the people from within
Pros
This company cares about his employees. Even when relocating offices, the packages are ok
Cons
to much internal politics and changes
Advice to Senior Management
Keep going on but stop moving right and left
Pros
The benifits are great. One of the better benifits packages out their.
Cons
Unless you are in the in crowd, forget about advancement. Awards are rarley given. The company will promote it fairness about promotions and advancement but managment constantly breaks it own guidlines. They set goals for individuals to make to advance. Then when those goals are made a whole new set comes in to make advancment. It is a moving target and specific guidlines. Reviews are done by people who do not know what you do and groups you against everyone in your field across the company. You work for several bosses instead of one. No clear cut chain of command in the company. The only way to make a carrer at this company is being freindly with someone that has power and the postion to make it happen. It is not about your work it is about who you know, who you go to church with and who your kids go to school with. You get the idea.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of the matrix managment it does not work.
Pros
Harris provides many development opportunities in the engineering profession and Harris is a very ethical company.
Cons
Work hours can be very long and although the company has a generous vacation package, you may not get to use it to its fullest.
Advice to Senior Management
Management has not embraced the concept of employee inclusion in decision making to the fullest. Many decisions could be more well thought out if more employees were included in the decision making process.
