I have been working at Harris full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Harris is a great company to work for! They invest in the long term career potential of each employee. The organization is made up of a good mix of early to late-career employees. Being able to leverage the experience of someone in the industry for 20+ has been invaluable.
Harris has extremely challenging engineering projects, requiring constant growth. The 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off), paid overtime, sick leave time, and 3 weeks paid vacation are great benefits. The work-life balance & culture of Harris are great if you're interested in having a family and life outside work.

    Cons

Compensation is slightly behind industry norm, but other benefits make up for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make compensation more competitive and you'll be far more successful securing the best employees.

    Pros

Good location and work life balance

    Cons

Management has lost direction in past 3 years. New strategies are focused on looking good for the short term and effective for long term ability and growth.

    I worked at Harris full-time

    Pros

Great opportunities for advancement and professional growth. Supervisors care about employees and treat them with respect. Very stable place to work. Nature of the work is both interesting and helps society out in a way that leads to a high level of job satisfaction.

    Cons

Constantly being asked to juggle more and more things at once can sometimes be overwhelming. 24/7 operations means having to work on weekends and holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

I have been working at Harris full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great technologies and customer missions to be a part of. Lots of cutting edge things to work on. Decent 401k matching (while it lasts).

    Cons

They have slowly chipped away at the benefits giving less and less each year. They show great profit as a company but then do poorly to compensate their workforce during annual salary increases. Mix that with increased benefits cost an a lot of folks are taking pay decreases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop chipping away at the core benefits that really matter to employee happiness at a company. The lean attitude is great but the company shouldn't be applying the lean mindset to employee compensation. It leads to a disenchanted and under appreciated workforce.

    Pros

They used to be a good plact to work.

    Cons

    They aren't anymore.
New upper management is profit oriented at the expense of employees.
    Middle managers have become arrogant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at what kept the company in business for over a century. Look at what has been lost since you have been in charge.

I have been working at Harris full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Harris has a lot of brilliant engineers and a wide range of technologies to work on. The 9/80 workweek is wonderful.

    Cons

Harris is being destroyed by a new CEO who has no regard for professional employees. His background in manufacturing is leading to the destruction of the morale. Experienced engineers with invaluable skills are getting pushed out in favor of young people who naturally cost less. This CEO brought in his own HR man who has an adversarial attitude toward employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People 55 and older are literally being issued a warning for "not ranking well" against their younger peers, when the intelligent and responsible thing to do is have a plan to make use of employees as they approach retirement age.

I have been working at Harris full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Your coworkers are the best part of this job.
9/80 at Government Communication Systems is nice but not sure how long it will last.
Starting 3 weeks vacation is a plus.

    Cons

    General -
    - Benefits are quickly declining. Each year health care coverage is lowered while the cost of health care goes up.
    - Profit Sharing has been reduced from a max of 6% to a max of 3%.
    - Pay Raises have been been minimal (<2%) over that last 5 years, and delayed 6 months in 2014. This does not look like it will change in the near future.
    - Education assistance has been reduced to 2 classes a year.
    - Management will regulatory assign work above your pay grade and your reward for being successful is additional work above your pay grade.
    - Little to no training.

    Supply Chain -
    - This is an engineering company, Supply Chain and other support functions are not respected within the Company.
    - Work load is very high and customers are difficult.
    - Promotions and advancement are very rare. No career growth opportunities within the Supply Chain organization.

    Pros

What's left of the company - would say benefits, but Obamacare is swiftly destroying what once was one of the best attributes of the company. Used to be opportunities to grow and camaraderie among the troops.

    Cons

It feels as though Bill Brown is leveraging all resources and positioning for a merger with his former buddies he has not yet been able to bring over to Harris. Morale is bottoming out, the only ones happy are new grads that are just entering the workforce and paid 2x of those with years of experience..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Our customers are beginning to feel the changes implemented with Bill Brown; soon Harris mgmt will understand how their bottom dollar greed is affecting our customers’ trust, causing them to resume their search for trustworthiness elsewhere.

I have been working at Harris full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I have been working for Harris since 2/2008 and love the friendly atmosphere, company is located in a kid friendly area; great schools, parks, beaches, and low cost of leaving.

    Cons

I moved to Central Florida in 2008 and took a position that paid 40% less than I made in the Northeast. For the first 3, or 4 years I had no regrets; working for Harris was great! Once the new CEO took over, Harris went from being a terrific company to an awful company. Employees are treated as if the work is done by the narcissist CEO and his cronies. Loyalty to company is slowly dwindling, compensations and promotions are almost non-existent (FY14) was the first increase of salary in many years and it was only a result of an awful review the CEO received by first ever survey.
The effort on the part of CEO is in place to sell this once great company. The writing is on the wall. The emphasis to save money and place the cash on the books, the high stock price with no support what so ever, no travel approval for the work force only for upper management, and finally, no training budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your head out of the dark and don’t assume that this CEO is looking out for the well being of the company and its employees.

    Pros

Harris has survived the economic downturn and gov sequestration. Division leadership continues to strive for a win-win mutually beneficial relationship with the employees

    Cons

New business is on a downhill slide. Current CEO is focused on cost cutting initiatives that in some areas is handcuffing the ability to get the work done. CEO has replaced top staff with his staff from former company and holding employee at bay, just a number.
