I worked at Harris Teeter part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good job for someone entering the workforce. I appreciate that they hire those with disabilities. Flexible. I was able to take leave for school and still have the job when I needed it, but that may have changed. I was also able to transfer to a location closer to my school for part of the year.

    Cons

Drama, unprofessionalism in management. Fraternization. May be able to move up, but likely only if someone likes you. Large variations among stores.

I have been working at Harris Teeter part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The employees have a very team-oriented mindset. The facilities are nice and always satisfactory.

    Cons

The pay is bleak, at best. Lower management will promise you a raise then upper management will not agree to follow through. The customers are picky and stuck-up and constantly confused by policies.

I worked at Harris Teeter part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You get paid every week. Schedule is very flexible. Nice profit-sharing twice a year. That's about it.

    Cons

No food discounts. Customer service micro-manages the front-end employees down to their bathroom breaks. After working there for a year I was not considered for any sort of promotion or pay raise. On-call means you are supposed to call in at your scheduled time and 99% of the time you are "needed for work."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please allow for more flexibility amongst workers who have the availability. You promote money-saving techniques such as saving trash bags and recycling, but there is no evidence that these measures create profit.

    Cons

    Normal retail cons:

-Do more with less, (time, people, etc.)
-Management by threats (More for Store Managers from District Managers)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that it is the "little people" that drive our company, they are the front line of our company and make the customer experience what it is. If we lose that aspect we lose our customer.

Horrible company who cares nearly nothing about their Employees

I worked at Harris Teeter full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay is better than industry standards for most positions
A twice yearly bonus check is certainly nice to have

    Cons

Corporate Management cares only about the bottom line at the expense of the employees.
Atmosphere is typically toxic as you have to fight constantly for hours and recognition
Expectations are typically excessive and incredibly unattainable
Store Management is of little assistance when dealing with employee dissatisfaction

Overall, this company has fostered an atmosphere of mistrust and disloyalty by constantly putting the needs of the employees to the bottom of the priority list. Hours are cut without any explanation, making it impossible to budget appropriately for everyday life. Policy and procedure is changed without any regard to employee safety. Considering how employees make or break the success of a company, it would seem that fact has been lost on the management of this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that without your employees, your success both past and future is limited. These are the people who greet and serve the customers that come to your stores, which has a direct correlation to your future. Having happy and healthy employees lead to happy customers. This should really be one of your main focus points.

    I worked at Harris Teeter

    Pros

The things that I enjoyed the most during my tenure at Harris Teeter were my colleagues (co-managers and other department leads) and my front end crew. Also, the opportunity to assist people was rewarding.

    Cons

Store management was abusive at the particular store to which I was assigned, although I know this is not the case throughout the entire system. There are many fine Store Managers at Harris Teeter & I am privileged to know several of them.

The hours and schedule border are very difficult -- often managers are asked to close one evening, open the next morning and fill in on overnight shifts at random. Eventually, this takes its toll on your mental and physical well-being. In addition, his expectation was applied consistently to all department leads at my store.

There was also considerable favoritism and inconsistency in how people are disciplined. Some are "written up" for minor issues, while Store Management "looks the other way" when their favorites

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be firm, fair and consistent and treat people the way that you would like to be treated. Recognize positive contributions as readily and consistently as you reprimand the negative. Executive Management does a fine job running the corporation, but is unaware at the lengths that Middle Management may go to to reach goals.
