    Pros

Part-timers eligible for Dental, Vision (for small fee) and 401K.
Part-timers participate in profit sharing bonuses.
Relatively easy to get last minute time-off if you can swap shifts with someone.

    Cons

Starting hourly pay varies based on "experience".

No new-hire orientation, per se. Training is computer based.

Part-timers only eligible for vacation if scheduled 1000 hours/year (averages to 20 hours/week). Problem is, you never average enough hours to be eligible.

Inconsistant hours - may work 8 hours one week, 25 the next. Difficult to budget time and money.

Extremely poor new-hire and on-going training.
Extremely poor communication between store management and hourly employees.

    Nepotism.

    A lot of favoritism.

Part-time cashiers (not sure about other departments) are scheduled to be "On-call" 1 day a week, which requires you to call in to see if you are needed. The draw-back is, you cannot make any plans for that day.

Lack of leadership and people skills in those who hold positions of authority. Does not appear to be any developmental focus in this area at all.

    A lot of turn-over.

Doctor's note required if you call out sick. For a part-timer, this may mean a week's pay or more if you do not already have insurance.

Very difficult (if not impossible!) to go full-time.

    Advice to Management

The same groceries can be purchased at any Publix, Food Lion, Bi-Lo or Wal Mart.
From a customer viewpoint, with the arrival of Publix in many markets, what used to set HT apart (the cleanliness and upscale atmosphere) is no longer an "edge".

From an employee perspective, companies are only as good as who you work for.
You manage things, not people. You LEAD people.
Your best asset are your employees, but you would never know it by how they are treated. (See some of the CONS above.)

Corporate philosphy seems to be: Get as much out of the employee as possible, but avoid giving them as much as you can.

If your store mangement lacks professionalism and leadership, it shows up in the morale of your front-line employees.
Other key indicators of this are: turnover, difficulty in obtaining new-hires, and attendance (including on-job injuries).

Companies who share information create more loyalty. Front-line employees need to know the store's goals and priorities.
Management/supervisors does not always treat employee with dignity and respect.
More often than not, you are presented with a peice of paper and told to sign with no explaination of what it is you're signing.

    Pros

The pros for working at Harris Teeter was that you got a 10% discount and you get a ton of hours because the store is usually busy-- at least where I worked. Another pro was that since I worked as a Barista, I didn't have to deal with all the bagging and getting carts whereas Harris Teeter employees had to. You get paid above minimum wage which is was pretty awesome.

    Cons

The managers are terrible... and I am not exaggerating. The managers pretty much expect you to be available all the time and never have any life outside of Harris Teeter. Also, customer service is the number one important thing at Harris Teeter, so even if a customer is just down-right rude to you to have to be super nice to them-- and expect management to take their side. Also, you had to take these ridiculous monthly tests and check in every month to hear about how to be nice to customers.

    Advice to Management

Be nicer to your employees. Honestly, all they are trying to do is make a little extra-cash and be respected.
