I worked at Harris Teeter part-time for less than a year

Decent hourly rate for starting job ad constantly increases with time.
Flexible hours and great customer service.
Job was easy and great way to start working.

    Cons

    Long hours of standing around.
    Lot of heavy lifting.
    Rude customers
the breaks were sometimes not great because if you worked during a busy time then you might not get a break but i think that varies from manager to manager.

I have been working at Harris Teeter part-time for less than a year

    Pros

I had chosen to work at this store for it's : commute (short drive), location (nice area), and for it's part time opportunities.

    Cons

Inflexible scheduling, their time off policies (part timers have to accumulate 1,000 hours in order to receive a vacation), break periods (on a crazy busy shift 15 minutes isn't enough), too many managers (at least in the front end dept.), not enough employees (in order to spread out the shifts/hours), and their internet site (for associates) is a pain in the neck to work with (when sending requests for schedule changes etc.) The Uniforms (polo type shirts/ are paid for by taking it out of your paycheck) instead of just paying for it (out of pocket) up front.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I guess the only thing that I would say to upper management is... Make sure that you have enough people on the "Front End" (i.e. baggers) so that the ones who work the hardest don't have to suffer due to a lack of personnel (i.e. not having enough associates to share the work load on a busy shift ). Also make the employee internet site easier to deal with, be more flexible w/ the scheduling / hours, and allow part time personnel to have flexibility when needing time off (not for vacation or medical leave) but by allowing a couple of days during the week off along w/ some weekends (every now and then) for personal time, errands, and other priorities outside of work.

    Pros

The company, as a whole, tries to take care of it's employees.

    Cons

If you are unfortunate enough to get a store manager that is less than stellar, you are out of luck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't give so much power to store managers.

I have been working at Harris Teeter full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Stable growth, biannual profit sharing, medical insurance, decent hours.
Good managers really make a difference in the entire store
Opportunities in the whole store for work and growth.

    Cons

Stores are either really slow with not enough employees or too busy with not enough employees.
Most of the management is not prepared or keen on leading a store with diverse associates and needs.
The whole company thrives on "on the job training" , managers are VERY unconcerned with employees being prepared for their job and more concerned with yelling at them for not getting their work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retrain managers in managing and people relations.
Take an earnest interest in training your employees rather than freaking out that the district manager MIGHT come by.
Not being able to work with employees for BASIC or FAMILY needs for time off is a big problem.

I worked at Harris Teeter part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

competitive pay, excellent products, good customers good coworkers, department management is excellent

    Cons

assistant store managers, front end managers, and customer service all mediocre at best; some locations have very poor morale among employees; some locations had better clientele than others. small town locations usually have a much better environment than the more urban environments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to floor managers! There were many, many occasions where my vacation requests were ignored, my break times were ignored, and my scheduling preferences were ignored. I even had to deal with managers who would make personal phone calls ON THE FLOOR and would ignore requests for attention or assistance over the intercom. There was also some disregard for life outside of work, including school obligations or when someone was sick, which I found to be extremely distasteful. Upper management does a very, very good job (my experience with three different locations), and they are wonderful when dealing with customers and employees alike, as well as keeping the store in line. Almost makes 99% of lower level management obsolete (since upper management ends up picking up their slack anyway).
