    Pros

The employees you work with are great, help the time go by quick and easily. Most people hired are nice and easy to work with.

    Cons

    Salary
    Upper management
    Hours
Upper management expects projects to be completed without giving adequate hours to do it and then get mad when the project hasn't been completed.

    Advice to Management

Most of the managers are great and easy to get along with, some that come in think they are beyond exceptional. Need to fix that, there's always something new to learn.

    Pros

    Laid back
    Fun working environment
    Fantastic discount

    Cons

Unless you're full time you barely get hours.
Pay sucks. No matter the position. Employees are severely taken for granted. Expectations so high that they are practically impossible. Cheap wages. Cheap supplies. Cheap company.

    Advice to Management

Pay nothing, you get nothing. Action plans definitely needed in ALL hastings stores.

    Pros

Working in a fast paced environment made the days go by faster. I really enjoyed helping customers find products they were looking for. In the small town where this Hastings was located, it was the only store of it's type, so people were ecstatic to find products locally that they would have had to travel for or buy online.

Some of my co-workers were very nice people.

    Cons

When employees or management started rumors, it would often circulate through the internal email system for all the stores. Many people got fired because of this and often the rumors were untrue. The amount of drama at this company was absolutely ridiculous. The management were terrible. They would blame the employees for problems that didn't exist. They would make you feel terrible for just about anything you did, and positive feedback was almost unheard of. Management would argue with customers, sometimes to the point of yelling.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees ideas and work with them, not against them, to solve problems. This industry is slowly dissapearing because of digital download services and the convenience of buying products online, the last thing you need to do is run customers off by yelling at them. The same goes for your employees. The turnover rate here is astonishing; how can you expect to run your business efficiently with trained employees if you are constantly running them off.

    Pros

Great products, good executives, 45 hour work week, lots of potential for movement in the company, lots of autonomy and ability to make decisions in your store

    Cons

Staffing structure needs to be reworked, DM's can be hit or miss (although most are good), compensation could be higher

    Advice to Management

Look at how store staffing is structered, maintaining stores to company standards can be difficult with current pay rates/staff levels. One associate covering the entire floor is not realistically able to maintain merchandising, customer service, and lp standards that company values

  7. A Fun Job, low pay

    Pros

Hastings is a fun place to work, you get to see all of the books, music, video games, and movies that come out weekly. Customers can be fun as well. Most of my coworkers were fun as well.

    Cons

Low pay, and the stores did not have enough autonomy to act on there own to appeal to their local communities.

    Advice to Management

Host a BUNCH of local activities in your coffee shops, local book signings, musicians, gamers, etc. Be a true source of entertainment.

    Pros

Flexible schedules, fun coworkers and environment, casual dress code..

    Cons

High turn over, mostly high school student age employees, no room for growth, company will probably be driven out of business by technology in the near future

    Pros

Great discounts, Co-workers, and coffee stores.

    Cons

Pay is really low even for small town average. Micro management was bad, projects were given to one person and expected to be done the next day.

    Advice to Management

Up wages and stop being cheap and you will get better employees! Two years wasted.
