I have been working at Hawaii Pacific Health full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Independence, accountability, top management interest and oversight, own hours, everyone treated as professionals.

    Cons

too much work and too few people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people to do some jobs based on workload as quantified. Be kinder on schedules given resource constraints.

Ok as a whole but each department needs help

I worked at Hawaii Pacific Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good salary and nice people. There is an understanding that there needs to be a work/life balance but you will often need to remind your managers about that.

    Cons

The departments need reorganization. When an employee leaves, there is no system in place to cover that persons work and it normally get dropped on someone else. Also not a lot of upward movement available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More work-life balance.

I worked at Hawaii Pacific Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Medical staff is very professional and great to work with. Centrally located near downtown Honolulu without the congestion of the downtown traffic and parking headaches.

    Cons

Administrative leadership does not recognize nor respect professional quality and is more concerned about risk management and catering to third party payors and nursing unions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower all of your physicians, not just the CMO

I worked at Hawaii Pacific Health as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

This can be a great place to work depending on the department and place your job is. I was at Harbor Court location as a temp worker. Most of the people here are really nice and down to earth. The workers here are willing to help you out on projects. The salary offering is also really competitive compared to many other Hawaii companies.

    Cons

I can only speak from the perspective of a temp worker and what other interns at HPH told me. The pipeline for entry level careers at HPH is not great. Whenever you intern or temp and you expect a future at the organization be sure to gauge where your position leads to (and ask this in the interview). There are many college graduates who started as interns at HPH that found a career at Help Desk, this is with their Business or IT degrees. There are maybe 1 or 2 interns that may get a analyst positions when they graduate. However the majority wound up in help desk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you have not already done so start looking at how not to under employ talent at HPH. This organization has recruited some great temps and interns, look for ways to best utilize their skills. Otherwise many people working below their capacity and this can create unsatisfactory work environment.

    Pros

Great people awesome benefits. Schedule is 6 weeks rotating with every third weekend off.

    Cons

It's a hospital and open twenty four hours so your schedule can be rotating which includes weekends and evenings including holidays. Parking is a little expensive.

Went from great to not so great/CRNA

Former Employee - Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in Honolulu, HI

I worked at Hawaii Pacific Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I used to be a staff CRNA at Straub (the facility that is a part of Hawaii Pacific Health, advertising this job) along with about 15 other CRNAs. A new department chairman was hired and had a vision for an all MD anesthesia department; made life miserable and all CRNAs eventually quit. That individual is no longer the chairman and the interim chairman is trying to change the culture.

    Cons

The upper management and surgeons supported the new anesthesia department chair's tactics of creating a miserable work environment ultimately leading to all the CRNAs quitting. It was a super micromanaged work environment; CRNAs do NOT have privileges for lines and regional. This facility is slightly backwards regarding their view on CRNA practice.

Overall the company is good, but if you get a bad manager, it cancels everything out.

I worked at Hawaii Pacific Health

    Pros

The benefits are good. The CEO is very personable, approachable, and seems to care about the employees.

    Cons

The manager I had was prone to favoritism and treated unprofessionally the subordinates that her favorite didn't like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR seems to care about employee engagement. One way to improve that is to implement a manager evaluation by subordinates (like an employee evaluation) to hold managers accountable for their actions.

I worked at Hawaii Pacific Health as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

I worked at the pharmacy at Wilcox and the staff is very friendly and easy to work with. It was easy to work with members of other departments, which made it easy to get things done to improve patient care and outcomes. Administrative workers were easy to get in touch with if there were problems with Epic or other systems in the hospital.

    Cons

We experienced the normal amount of issues with communication between departments, but there is a constant effort to identify problems and work on creating procedures to resolve issues and prevent future conflicts from arising.
