I have been working at Haworth full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Family owned company. Financially stable. Great employees. Great products.

    Cons

Shift in senior management mindset. Historically, very focused on company values (Customers, Members, Integrity, Continuous Improvement, Results, World). In the last 5 years or so, the Values are given lip service, but not demonstrated.

    Advice to Management

Lose your egos. Live the Values.

I have been working at Haworth full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Inspiring facilities, genuine people - unpretentious, culture of integrity and honesty. Big into sustainability - walks the talk when it comes to company values. Culture is evolving and glad to see that company is very much performance based and holds people accountable. Good development opportunities. Love that it is a family owned business. The Chairman and owner walks around - knows people by name and even knows the names of your kids. Puts policies in place to allow for work-life balance.

    Cons

    Can't think of anything.

    Advice to Management

Ont he right trajectory - keep holding people accountable for results. Those who perform appreciate this!

I worked at Haworth full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, opportunity for overtime during busy months, co-workers are nice and easy to work with for the most part.

    Cons

Depending on what department you started in, you were either trained decently or thrown in and expected to make rate pretty quick. There was a training log for new employees and all though it was filled out by team leaders, it was not overseen that it was followed correctly. The biggest problem I saw lied within the high management, not necessarily the plant manager. New rule changes, procedures, and guidelines were changed so frequently; it became difficult to keep everything straight and became frustrating. Nothing was ever consistent. Certain employees in "the circle" would get leniency when it came to time-off while others would not. A lot of work decisions, such as promotions for an example, were based on popularity or who you were friends with. Some people were put in charge of areas they knew nothing about, and tried to change expectations on productivity/procedures, and then wondered why it wasn't working. Employees who worked in the areas were asked for ideas, but when given they were not listened to or viewed as important. Then a new procedure change would be made by someone who had never even worked in the area before, or knew it's day to day operations. It was rare to get compliments or encouragement for good work, however the negative talks came quite frequently. I could go on and on, but to sum things up, it was more or less the equivalent of high school all over again. Low morale overall, talk behind peoples back, tension, and hypocrisy filled this place.

    Advice to Management

Go to the different plants, but instead of just presenting at a team meeting, put safety glasses on, go out into the actual factory, and take the time to go to the different work centers and see what goes on. And talk to the employees, take notes and listen. Even if it takes a couple trips to cover all the areas. It will be worth it, isn't that the core of managing a business in the first place?

    Pros

Work-life balance and culture are great

    Cons

Executive Management is not open to ideas/change from mid-level managers. As a result the company is consistently slow to capitalize on emerging trends.

    Advice to Management

Trust your mid-level managers - allow employees to own their work. There's a lot that could be contributed...It could transform the company.

Haworth has a beautiful facility and makes high quality products. The culture is very strong and they live by their values.

    Cons

Difficult to advance in the company since it has a very flat structure. Company is resistant to change, so it is difficult to talk to leadership

    Pros

Across the board, the people are good, friendly, hard workers (it's he Midwest culture).

    Cons

This is really an old fangled engineering and manufacturing company at the core, trying to convince itself (and the world) that it is a design innovator. It's not. Innovation is a painful, mostly futile exercise at Haworth, as is collaboration. The company culture is rooted in an old school "command and control" management style, with a passion only for sales volume and operational efficiency. The morale at HQ in Holland is low; there is almost a sense of despair from the employees who have to deal everyday with the shifting whims and upside down priorities of management. This all emanates from the executive level - the handful of high-rollers who crash about in their struggle for power, putting on a show for visitors and the public, while failing to agree upon a vision and strategy to elevate the company. Selling millions of dollars of furniture to the government does not an industry leader make! The frenetic pace seems to fool management into thinking it has actually succeeded in being more than a very ordinary enterprise. Don't be taken by the marketing spin; this is a company stuck in neutral, and oddly comfortable with chaos. But, hey...everyone keeps smiling!

I have been working at Haworth full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company values, privately held, many opportunities for professional development.

    Cons

Even though they offer many opportunities to develop professionally, it may be a challenge finding a new position. Many employees leave company to continue their professional growth. Work / Life balance can be difficult in the plants.

    Pros

Benefits ain't so great but it is something.

    Cons

Closed minded, a lot of politics and personal emotion gets in the way of work. Controlling management would be the biggest. Pay is not great either.

    Advice to Management

Sadly speaking, I don't think bad managers will be thrown out but we keep losing good people.
