Interesting work destroyed by incompetence and micromanaging

I worked at Hay Group as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

As a UI Developer, there is interesting work being done at the product level. If you are an employee, the benefits package is well above average. Base salary may be lower though.

    Cons

Technical managers are universally incompetent and spend time playing games shifting blame, avoiding actual work, and attempting to micromanage a process they know nothing about to seem useful.

In my time there, several meetings between developers and managers took place in an attempt to dictate architectural decisions after the fact to "speed" up delivery of products. The very basic tenants of software development are completely ignored and project cycles descend into confusion, held together only by the fortitude of lower level employees.

There are massive problems regarding departmentalization. Services team members are managed and treated entirely different, with differing expectations on quality of work, from other technical teams. Managers play games to try to protect themselves from blame when projects are late, leading to a culture of secrecy. Overtime and weekend hours are expected to help make up the gap in delivery dates that are delayed by an inability of departments to share responsibility and managers to provide their teams with the necessary tools for success. Managers are arrogant and dismissive of these problems. The rule is that managers are always right and everyone else is always wrong. Speaking up about the problems in the company tends to result in a quick exit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regarding the technical managers, admit that you have a lot to learn about software development, hire great developers, and stay out of those developers' way.

    Pros

Flexible workplace where consultants create their own careers. Plenty of good people who genuinely care about clients and their work.

    Cons

Management needs to practice what they preach. No investment in support systems and infrastructure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the company instead of working people into the ground to make up for ancient systems.

    Pros

Great reputation and some very sharp colleagues

    Cons

Outdated technology for client delivery and lack of internal support systems and processes. Lack of collaboration between products, services, and regions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop and communicate realistic vision and strategy. Determine whether collaboration is to be a true value or merely lip service. Quickly put resources and technology into place after determining whether we need to buy or build.

    Pros

Tons of personal freedom to find your niche and develop it. Support for outside the box thinking if it obtains results.

    Cons

Do not expect official direction or guidance. For those starting out, an effective mentor is critical. Do not expect to go far unless you make your numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need help at the top. Time for new and effective leadership.
