I have been working at Health Alliance Plan of Michigan full-time

    Pros

Some wonderful people, work is fairly easy, flexible work schedule is a great perk. Adequate number of days off, office culture is fairly easy-going.

    Cons

Definite lack of leadership. Certain people and departments overrun their authority and can make life difficult. Salary is fair, but raises/bonuses lag behind industry standards. (this is a non-profit, so it's not totally unexpected) Due to budget cuts by parent company, there is an overall feeling of uncertainty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication at all levels needs to be improved. Employees who finger point and blame others should be corrected rather than encouraged.

I have been working at Health Alliance Plan of Michigan full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

New CEO is trying to make change. Lots of training for employees and leaders through Henry Ford (parent company). Never a dull moment. Benefits are okay. Good vacation even though some days were just made mandatory.

    Cons

Senior leaders have their own agendas and it works against the progress of the company. Company is not stable nor did it prepare for Health Care Reform properly. Company expects 60 hour work weeks every week in most departments. Vacation days were reduced.

    Pros

    The compensation was fairly okay.

    Cons

Engage with the employees to determine where their skills can be better utilized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage transparency and listen to your employees to keep the workplace upbeat. Employees want to be able to trust you and also feel appreciated. The company should also provide a much healthier work/life balance to improve employee morale.

Keep up the team outings away from the workplace to raise morale. Let people unwind and relax away from the office with the people they spend so much time with. This allows employees to get to know each other more on a personal level.

    Pros

Great culture, great compensation for a nonprofit, great benefits, great work / life balance, a great place to work for life

    Cons

There's been a lot of executive turnover in the last few years, and good folks are leaving for better opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Two meager across-the-board raises in the last five years isn't enough to keep good people around.

    Pros

Opportunities to learn through training and development,

    Cons

Management didn't actually listen to employee concerns. The HR dept needed a lot of help. Salaries weren't that great and yearly increases were almost non existent. There wasn't too much room for advancement, unless you knew someone.

I have been working at Health Alliance Plan of Michigan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent, tightly-knit work teams (yes, they'll accept you in, they're not exclusive groups! ) , and an amazing work environment. There ARE companies who DO care about their employees' well-being (I almost thought they went extinct). Continuous training, multiple opportunities for self-development. Supportive Management at all levels. Flexible work schedules (to you, as well as them!). Yes, family/personal life DOES exist!

    Cons

Just like every other place, POLITICS. Can't run away from those. There is also some work to be done at Business Unit demands vs. IT Department delivery abilities, BUT, to their merit, it's going OK and things are working out decently.

Another con - at employment, the HR is making salary offers that simply invite you to hang up on them the second they open their mouths - i.e., offering people with 20+ work experience, degrees and certs the same salary that a college grad with no experience would get. You have to be alert, on your toes, pay attention and stand up for yourself!

Compensation COULD be better, but it is fairly decent at where it's at, especially considering this is a non-profit entity (again, you have to fight for that)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None - HAP management (at least the IT side) do care about the employees and have always gone out of their ways to help - including doing things at a personal level.

I have been working at Health Alliance Plan of Michigan full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits, friendly work environment, flexible, supportive. You can feel the positive energy, and the teams collaborate well. They are open to ideas and fresh opinions. The new work areas are light and open. I've met many employees who have worked here for 12-28 years, which speaks a lot about a company- job security, opportunity for growth, and a great place to work.

    Cons

Since it is a non-profit, the salary is not super high, but it is fair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to engage with employees and implement the philosophy you put in place
