I worked at Health Canada full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Do you remember that song by Lover Boy "everybody's working for the weekend"... in Govt its' "everybody's working for the pension" ... except not a lot of relevant work is being done... But there are some positives including:

    Flexibility
    Good salary
    Very smart coworkers
Lots of opportunities to work in many areas and many projects if you show even minimal motivation
Can make a difference to lives of Canadians

    Cons

    Lack of flexibility
Very dumb coworkers - More unqualified Francophones and college slackers than you can wave a stick at
If you don't show initiative you will get lost in the bureaucracy
Lots of bright people here became discouraged by the bureaucracy and having good ideas knocked down
Lots of make work projects to give appearance of being "productive".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice. Managers in Government are brilliant.

I have been working at Health Canada full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good work life balance.
    Great benefits.
    Nice location in downtown Edmonton.

    Cons

Due to budget cuts, the move of operations to HQ out east resulted in the loss of jobs and in the reduction of morale of our department.

Managers are distant and do not seem open.

No opportunities for advancement in our department. All higher level jobs are taken and due to budget restraints, no new positions or new hires are allowed.

Pay is much less than in the private sector due to deductions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be friendlier and more open.

I have been working at Health Canada as a contractor

    Pros

It's a job if you desperately need one. The nature of work conducted can be satisfying. The facilities are good. The offices are easily accessible by transit.

    Cons

Incompetent management, poor relationship management, confused leadership, doesn't care for employees at all. High staff churn and burn out. Staff that disagrees is shown the door or is blocked. People are afraid to even reasonably challenge status quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start caring more for the department and less for yourself. Listen to your team more. Remind yourselves that you are a public servant.

    Pros

Meaningful work if you are in the right department and under the right manager.

    Cons

Many of the permanent staff lack passion for their work and are only there for a paycheck. Lots of people on short contract or hired by agency. They may be doing the same work but large pay disparity.
