I worked at Health Market Science full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Culture is great. Relaxed work environment. Great people to work with and my managers were great.
    - Health benefits were good and 401k was ok. (now its LexisNexis so benefits are different)
    - Flexible schedule and many people work from home depending on your position and role.
    - There is encouragement for personal growth and internal job postings.
    - Emphasis on technology and innovation.
    - Great entry level position and great company to get experience in.

    Cons

    - For me, work can be busy, but not challenging enough (I'm sure higher positions are obviously more challenging)
    - Pay was under 40k, even after promotion and working over 3 years.
    - Promotions include new title and duties, but not low raises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Offer more challenging and real growth/learning opportunities for entry level positions.
-Continue positive work environment and keep employees fired about work with cutting-edge technology and continue innovation to keep growing.

I worked at Health Market Science

    Pros

A lot of smart people, sales group is friendly and accessible, benefits are decent for a small company. The CEO is a very nice guy with a positive attitude.

    Cons

Complete lack of communication/disconnect between upper/mid management and contributing employees.

I find the place a little claustrophobic, you work very close physically witt the people you work with. Some team members are great and some are difficult to communicate with, but the one constant is that you are on top of each other all day.

Instructions are lacking and 'mistakes' are documented and used against you when there are performance questions. However, middle management gives you no indication that there are issues until you are bombarded with them all at once. Overall its a very negative environment where you are afraid to make mistakes.

HR is basically there to do the bidding for upper management and 100% toes the company line. Lots of lawsuits after terminations

Lots of re orgs and management changes with the same results or worse. They hire a sales VP for a month and then fire him and promote people in the management clique - results do not change. Each years the bookings #s go down and there seems that there is no way to stop the slide.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate more effectively, provide feedback ,and use positive reinforcement.

    Pros

After working here get the following:
    Stress
    Stress
    Stress

The company vision is blurred as they are not forseeing the feature. The product is not sellable.

    Cons

Low-ball offers, low pay, but good health benefit. No leadership opportunities. Politically motivated teams dragging in different directions trying to seek attention resulting in redundant solutions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unstructured approach to projects. Big data is failing and useless data and analytics. Every solution are point solution and not scalable. No possibility for growth

I worked at Health Market Science full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some good and creative people though many of the best leave frustrated, some managers willing to find new offerings, easy to hide inside

    Cons

Environment seems "toxic" (most employees eat alone lunch at their desk), not much camaraderie; work location in a wasteland; CEO been there too long with no results and inability to make profit; company serves too many sub-segments in healthcare - hard to know what they really do that isn't a commodity - unfocused

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need better 401K plan, move the office to somewhere pleasant to work and make it fun, look hard at executive contribution

I have been working at Health Market Science full-time

    Pros

Health Market Science appreciates smart people who are willing to take risks to utilize new technology in its healthcare solutions. The company is nimble and each person's contributions counts. Employees can work from home some days per week.

    Cons

Sometimes HMS needs to plan more time to account for risks and unknowns, especially utilizing new technology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company has amazing talent and products: needs to market and sell these more to achieve the potential it has.

    Pros

Pharma is a great place to get experience.
If you work hard for a year here you can gain a lot of knowledge, then leave to further your career

    Cons

    Layoffs, brutal managers, NO RAISES

Expect to start low and stay low - If you get an offer be smart and negotiate.

There are people who have worked at this company for 4 years and are still making very low salary - The best way to make more money is to move around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay people more to keep them
Its comical that it takes people to quit to realize the impact it makes

I have been working at Health Market Science full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Heavy focus on open source tools (Cassandra, Hadoop, Angular JS, Ruby, MySQL, OpenOffice...) which is a great way to become technically proficient and flexible in the IT workforce. Some training opportunities exist to get a boost coming up to speed with these tools.

Company has a flexible telecommuting policy. Some folks work from home one or two days a week. Summer hours provide for an early end of day on Friday. Most important things are getting the work done and honoring time commitments

Benefits package is okay. It covers the essentials - 401k, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, tuition assistance, bonus plan.

    Cons

Some groups are more social than others. Hard to get to know people if they don't work in your group.

Such be more training for all levels - analysts, managers. This would help people grow in the company better

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember to reward top performers. Promote the company more.

Ample Opportunity, Exciting Technology, and Top Talent in a Collaborative Environment

I have been working at Health Market Science full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Bleeding-edge technology sets the foundation for innovative solutions. Motivated teams will pull together to solve problems and help meet deadlines. Top-down culture of collaboration and innovation keeps employees engaged and promotes a sense of ownership of successes. Employee (and family) health care coverage is well above average for comparably-sized companies.

    Cons

High performance expectations across the board can be intimidating to newcomers. Client deliverables can sometimes have aggressive timelines that occasionally require off-hours work. Technology platform is rapidly-changing, so processes can require frequent changes -- not a good fit if you are someone who feeds off of consistency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue challenging the employees to solve problems creatively -- you have top-flight talent, use it. Continue looking to put the right people in the right open positions, whether you are promoting from within or hiring for the next open entry-level position. Lead by example and continue to keep communication lines open for all.

I have been working at Health Market Science full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Iniital assessment was that the team was pretty cohesive, collaborative and supportive of one another. Almost as soon as I started, I had a family emergency that required serious attention and they were completely understanding and flexible. So much so that I WANTED to work from the ICU and put out great solutions. Team of intelligent people, with definite plans to go somewhere.

    Cons

CEO, Matt Reichert, is an ideas person which is great. He can see possibilities and has a good team to put together the logistics of carrying out those ideas. However, because he is too often tainted by relationships with certain members of the team, his judgement can become cloudy. Additionally, he has an idea one day and then two days later he has a different idea so there's this constant changing direction that hapens. There have been at least 3 reorganizations since January 2012, the first of which was to address the exponential growth they were experiencing. However, since the first reorganization, the team has become fractured. The sales team is not held accountable for their lack of production OR their extravagant spending. And, the politics below Matt are unbelieveable. They've entered new markets and launch new products without doing the proper research, threw a sales person at it and expected it to be a ridiculous success. It doesn't work that way most of the time. There is a lot of in-fighting between the executive team members and Sales Executives have been given far too much latitude on too many levels. They got rid of a lot of employees in January to pay down their debt. They've got their debt down and now laid off more people. I don't think they are getting the kind of offers they were hoping for in terms of selling the company and are now trying to make up the difference that sales isn't bringing in by whittling down the size of the team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hiring people and then just laying them off doesn't make the remaining employees feel good about the company's future. Also, no matter how many times you reorganize the company, if your sales team isn't doing their job, then you're not going to change the situation for the better. You're just going to leave the rest of us worried that we're next on the chopping block.
