I would look some place else

Human Resources (Current Employee)
Woodland Hills, CA

I have been working at Health Net

ProsSome good HR technology tools for both HR and the employees.

ConsWeak HR practices, constant rounds of lay-offs, disconnected HR team. Lack of solidarity and teamwork. Poor direction and cohesive leadership

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on the culture and the profits will follow - happy employees who are in fear of losing their job on a daily basis will create a production work culture. Raise the bar on performance stop hiring the bottom rung.

Good folks, impossible systems

Manager (Former Employee)
Tempe, AZ

I worked at Health Net

ProsHealth Net is a good company. They have a remarkable community service culture - annual Celebration of Children - going on 20 years - employees give up their own Christmas party to throw a grand one for local needy kids. In general, the leaders are people of character, integrity, well-intentioned. Health Net Federal Services is the best-run segment of the company and I would unequivocally recommend working there - the others are hit and miss depending on the leaders, and unfortunately, except for Jay Gellert and Roger Greaves, everyone else is a temporary placeholder.

ConsThe company just can't follow through with leadership development or other employee programs. Its biggest challenge is outdated systems, and therefore limitations, make it impossible for this company to be competitive with their giants like UnitedHealth, Wellpoint, etc.
Basicaly, HN is a wannabe company -they want to be better than they are, and so they keep trying, which is a good thing. There is a huge variety of management styles - so make sure you know the department head's leadership style - there is no consistency across the company in the way employees are treated. Some employees can telecommute, have flexible schedules, and etc; others do not have this possibility, even though the same job.

Advice to Senior ManagementIntegrate leadership and supervisory skills throughout the company for a consistent employee experience. Emphasize customer service and relationship and don't promise customers things the systems can't handle.

Laziness is encouraged. Longevity and incompetence is rewarded

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Woodland Hills, CA

I have been working at Health Net

ProsExcellent compensation, benefits package. Very generous work from home opportunities.

If you're looking for an easy paycheck, have a hectic home life w kids maybe, little accountability, HN is a great place for you.

ConsDon't expect recognition for doing a good job. Mediocrity is encouraged and is so pervasive in the company. "Good enough" is good enough at Health Net.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo one without a bachelors degree (minimum) should ever be in a leadership position. Vice presidents at a minimum should know how to write standard English without obvious grammatical mistakes in formal communications.

No one with just a high school degree should ever be promoted to a leadership position.

Continuously communicate corporate strategy, goals, and vision often. HN is a company with no clear vision or direction.

Really good place to work

Director (Current Employee)
Woodland Hills, CA

I have been working at Health Net

ProsStrong performers can really excel at Health Net. Pay is average, Benefits very good, Severance is better than industry. They are positioned for strong growth right now so a great time to join them.

ConsSlow decision making at times, duplication of effort is frustrating as there are competing interests between units. Technology solutions are old.

Advice to Senior ManagementPush more decisions further down in the company. Empower middle management and then hold them accountable for results. Value smaller units contribution.

Great place to skate by, but banish the thought of long term success.

Claims Manager (Former Employee)
Woodland Hills, CA

I worked at Health Net

ProsIncompetent management allows ineffective and lazy workers to survive for a long time. Great 401k match, and lots of PTO.

ConsThe company is going down the toilet and management has no clue what to do. Poor long term job security.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize that you have failed. Reposition the company as a small company and abandon dreams of being acquired by Aetna.

A "good enough" company

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Rafael, CA

I have been working at Health Net

ProsSupport for work/life balance. Good benefits and pay is average.

ConsContinually doing more with less. Constant layoffs and restructuring has negative impact on morale and ability to provide good customer service.

Senior management has no apparent concern about how erratic decision-making and lack of communications about company direction and strategy have on the employees. Many upper management executives are viewed as unapproachable and out of touch.

Complete lack of support for real employee development and training. Professional development is not financially supported by the company, except for very narrowly defined benefits for continuing education.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop using layoffs as a method to increase profitability. People have become numb because of all of the changes. Increase communication about what is really happening in the company. The rumor mill is alive and well, and most employees are extremely concerned about ongoing layoffs.

They pay well because they have too...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Woodland Hills, CA

I have been working at Health Net

ProsGreat pay but if you are a "B' player you might be happy there but if you are a star, driven and deliver not the place for you.

ConsUninsipred organization who is barely hanging on. Senior management needs to be replaced. This is a great place to hang your hat if you don't want to work hard and jsut get by. The place is empty at 5 pm.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemove senior management and start over with a new vision.
