    I worked at Healthline (More than a year)

    Pros

    Lots of snacks and lunches. Health insurance is good and the company pays for a good portion of HSA money. Can work from home some times. Dogs in San Fransisco office though, sometimes they can be loud. Small and nimble company, its very collaborative and there are few blowhards... they do make you do more than your fair share of work tho.

    Cons

    Leadership is completely lost. One person in particular is a liability and leads by intimidation and fear. He has no problem screaming, insulting, and berating employees in public or on conference calls. I've seen this happen to many coworkers. High turnover in the media group. NY office is like a joke compared to the treatment of the SF office. They are the red-headed step child. Limited benefits and perks. Constantly overworked, understaffed, and underpaid. People in the San Fransisco office are promoted all the time......and those in NY never get promotions. Time off is substandard..... 17 days (Vacation, sick, etc.).....you're required to use 3 when the office is closed. Maternity leave is disability time..... the company offers none. No career growth opportunities The board of directors is all male along with much of the senior leadership team. It shows...... People that win the "Living our Values" awards are mostly all male. It's 2015 get some women on the board. HR is unresponsive

    Advice to Management

    Reward dedicated people that do good work with more than a stuffed animal. Seriously, that is an actual "reward". Get rid of media "leadership" they have no idea what they're doing

    Pros

    Excellent work life balance - best I've ever seen Cute dogs in the office (but 1 or 2 of them can get too loud) Fun parties and gatherings by the culture committee Great people with a passion for health CEO who's committed to growth and fostering a good work environment The HIT side of the business -- this is where the growth and potential lies, what the board members are excited about. If you're offered a job on this side, take it.

    Cons

    So then why the 2 star rating? I wish I could give 2.5 stars. The Media side of the business is anachronistic and muddled by old, convoluted processes. It's hard for anyone to learn the ropes much less innovate in that kind of system. Health advertising and sales is not where you want to be if you're in sales/adops/account management and want to advance in your career due to the many restrictions. Or if you are in these fields and want to work in health, work for a leader like WebMD. Revenue recognition was a nightmare and the entire process was largely misunderstood by upper management. Lots of pressure to perform with inadequate tools. Took a long time to revamp because many of the processes had been institutionalized.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work with office culture. I know the Media side has come a long way but it has a lot farther to go. Tear down the structure, get new management, and get people in there that actually understand digital sales in this era.

    Pros

    My years at Healthline had both good and bad. I think the experience heavily relies on your direct management. Overall, the people are wonderful and I made lasting friendships with coworkers, but when it comes to your tasks and how the company handles you, your direct manager is in charge. A tip to interviewees, remember that you should be interviewing the company as well. Make sure that you can see yourself getting along with everyone you meet in this process. I say this because in the past year, the faces of Healthline have changed dramatically. Pros: Snacks (healthy), 2 water machines, refrigerators Great people (lower levels) Good location Flexible hours Unlimited breaks Dogs in the office Good amount of PTO

    Cons

    Yearly MBOs / Reviews (always delayed) Company politics No career growth No (fair) raises Low salaries (other companies laughed when they heard what Healthline pays) Opinions aren't heard by management

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees and make meaningful changes to help them. If you help your employees, they will help the company grow in value. Don’t turn a blind eye and ignore negative feedback. Ask all employees to give a candid review of the company, not just the executives and upper management.

    Pros

    - There are some great people working here in the lower and mid management levels - Pretty fun work environment - decent office, great location, they try to make it fun with food and parties, etc. - Pay is acceptable for the most part

    Cons

    - Nobody is really committed to the cause. It's almost all profit motive, and you can tell. - Even so, they treat their employees terribly, by playing favorites and rewarding ineptitude as long as the inept ones are toeing the company line - Anyone who speaks up is either "laid off" to supposedly cut costs or ostracized to the point where they leave on their own - Senior management never fully commits to anything, and then blames those underneath when their half-baked plans don't work out - Many unkept promises

    Advice to Management

    Learn how to cultivate talent and not ineptitude. Don't make promises you can't keep and don't start projects/plans without being willing and able to follow through.

    Pros

    the positives are a very strong engineering team.

    Cons

    they don't know how to build, market or sell products...only rehashes and professional services of what has come before. mgmt team is weak and in need of an overhaul.

    Advice to Management

    since i got here the company has literally changed focus 2-3 times, planned, started work on and then killed several products. good people have left at all levels and current management does not provide leadership. the folks that have stayed remain worried about the future.

    Pros

    Healthline has a young, fun and energetic staff. The location couldn't be beat and there are some perks (plenty of snacks, on-site workout facility/trainer/RMT, monthly company breakfasts).

    Cons

    Energy and creativity gets stifled by lack of guidance and constant shifts in direction from upper management. The company is very short sited and doesn't invest in the professional growth of its staff. This is dependent on what team you work for, but the general culture of the company plays fast and loose. As with any small company, gossip rules.

    Advice to Management

    Focus more on the positive contributions of employees. Actually encourage employees to voice opinions instead of stifling them if there isn't consensus. Most of all, give employees the freedom to control their work instead of monitoring them at every step or redoing work without communicating it to team members. Be more forthcoming with long term company goals.

    Pros

    decent work-life balance, relatively small so nimble and leaves the opportunity to jump in and make changes without the bureaucracy often found in larger corporations, generally folks are nice to work with though don't get too attached as the turnover rate is crazy, snacks in the kitchen.

    Cons

    senior management is pretty awful when it comes to innovative and forward thinking, often shoot first, aim second. weak management often giving subpar or inadequate direction. most lower level employees see healthline as a starting point or as a paycheck, creates severe complacency. this company is still stuck in the 90's in terms of innovation although they'll tell you otherwise. pretty sad health benefits for a "health" company, and pay is generally on the lower level of scale per position.

    Advice to Management

    listen to your employees, many great ideas out there. do a better job of fostering communication. pay just a little more competitively to keep good talent. offer benefits such as outside workshops, classes, etc. to keep your staff motivated in such a dry field (healthspace).

    Pros

    Location is easy to get to from most of the bay area Nice coworkers. (Developers, Finance, SEO, etc) Laid back work environment

    Cons

    People only follow management out of shear curiosity. Low salaries. Hires LOTS of H1B Visas at a LOW income just to fill up the engineering team. CTO feels that he is successful based on number of underlings, not quality of work. VP of engineering is just a coder who manages a few people. Knows VERY little of how to manage people.

    Advice to Management

    Leave! Hire a new management team who know the industry.
