I worked at Hearst Corporation as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Got to rub elbows with some of the most important people in the fashion/media industry. Opportunity to learn a lot if you took the initiative. Felt helpful to the production of the magazine even if the work I did as an intern was considered "grunt" work.

    Cons

Not for someone who isn't willing to do "grunt" work, run errand, or start from the bottom. Long hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hearst claims it has an internship "program", but I didn't experience any form of structure while I was there. Perhaps the program has improved since I left.

I worked at Hearst Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Discounts on magazine subscriptions, decent time off allowance, OK benefits

    Cons

HIGH TURNOVER at Hearst Newspapers!!! In the sales department, the revenue goals are constantly changing. There is no structure - random numbers are just picked from the sky. Compensation is also changing every other month, making goals unattainable, therefore, you may no money. Management spends too much time on meaningless training tactics, and they expect you to be out of the office 90% of the time when there are no resources available to be able to spend that much time away from your desk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need a complete overhaul of staff and management. You need to create a more positive atmosphere, so people actually want to work there.

I have been working at Hearst Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The location, and being able to have lunch in the park

    Cons

    Endless...
Micromanaging to the nth degree by eic of magazine, and no respect for employees, and their ideas and opinions; no room for growth, and management ignores interest internally to hire from outside; departments treated unequally; yearly review postponed to September, although you're still expected to give your goals; no raise in over 3 years, unless you count the cost-of-living minuscule raise that doesn't come close to covering anything; company says it can't give raises, yet spends lots of money producing a very expensive printed flyer; health benefits are lousy when compared to other similar companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trim from the top, and stop micromanaging everyone else!

I worked at Hearst Corporation full-time

    Pros

    Good work flexibility
    Owned by Hearst Corp

    Cons

    Low quality product offerings
No back end rep support or investment
Horrible lack of respect for sales people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go get an MBA so you can at least seem intelligent. Also realize that sales people are the only revenue generators in any given organization, you should treat them like gold.
