I have been working at Hearst Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Currently very aggressive with finding what works in digital. Great people. Open to letting people work on things outside their specific job to learn and grow.

    Cons

Typical large company challenges. You have to work with a lot of people to get anything done.

I have been working at Hearst Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Brands are well-known
Hearst Tower is gorgeous... cafeteria is fantastic

    Cons

Inept management, particularly on the digital side
Encouraged to work AGAINST your colleagues
Few, if any, opportunities for growth
    Did I mention inept management?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear out Hearst Digital and start over. The environment is more than toxic and doesn't encourage revenue growth. Most of the team has cleared out on their own and have rejected the BS management mantra. Snake oil salesmanship and lots of fancy buzzwords does not a modern digital culture make.

    Pros

The other reps are nice people.

    Cons

All levels of management lie to everyone including their customers. Products don't work. They don't value loyalty and change direction too often. I don't expect the LocalEdge division of Hearst to be around more than 2 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Value your employees.Stop lying.

    Pros

Money, easy to play the game if you know the politics

    Cons

Terrible expectations set for your success/goals. All politics. Stuck in the stone age.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the politics, groom younger employees who are knowledgable about cutting edge tech and allow them to innovate.

    Pros

Manager is hands on and 100% committed to your success. Company believes in education and ongoing training .
Great commission package and many short term incentives and contests. You get to your own your business and the sales cycle from beginning to end. Every 3 months I am pleasantly surprised by ongoing efforts to improve quality of products and culture for employees. We have hands down best product and price compared to competitors in market.

    Cons

    Office is a bit outdated
Different departments & Divisions are segmented
    Not the best health benefits

    Pros

Cafeteria is nice, the Tower is beautiful piece of architecture.

    Cons

The reality is that magazines and newspapers are dying industries. The company was at least smart enough to invest in other industries/companies which basically fund those two black holes. So if you opt to work in the newspaper or magazine divisions, be prepared to be nicked and dimed on everything. Extremely low pay increases and no bonuses. They cut staff regularly, but don't do it in a smart way. Cliques abound, and if you sell your soul and become a sycophant, then you might do well here. They rarely promote based on ability/performance but more on how much you suck up to certain executives. There is one executive in particular who has gotten multiple complaints to HR on said executive's management style (one of condescension, verbal abuse, little to no communication), but remains at this company. That alone should tell you that Hearst is blind to how its teams operate, and what it takes to run an effective organization. Run, don't walk away from this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to boost employee morale, via spot bonuses, team outings, free company swag, FREE company gym membership, and regular company-wide town hall meetings. Get rid of executives that have a known, long history of mismanagement. Recognize that to compete in this industry and retain top talent, you need to pay at or above industry pay scale.

    Pros

You get to work with great brands and advertisers. There is room for growth within the company.

    Cons

Bonuses are dependent on sales hitting their goal, minimal to no salary increases, no reviews and the current morale is low.

I have been working at Hearst Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has really solid values and is extraordinarily ethical. Their product and reputation are a strong addition to my resume.

    Cons

My personal experience with a micro-manager boss has marred things, with almost no work-life balance I don't see how I can maintain my personal happiness and continue with this company. Office culture and morale at my job-site do not seem to be a concern of corporate execs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale and job-satisfaction need to be a bigger concern of management. Salary alone won't result in retention of talent. I would suggest a job-satisfaction survey every few years to determine which job-sites have issues, and address those issues quickly.

I worked at Hearst Corporation part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

great teamwork, pretty easy going environment. If you love journalism, this is a good paper.
Incredible location right on the water at the base of Queen Anne and the Seattle Center.

    Cons

No more print newspaper, online only. Under big corporate management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to your people. Too much second guessing and treating staff as peons.
