    I worked at Heartland Hospice

    Pros

The entire interdisciplinary team is friendly and supportive. The patients served are grateful and deeply impacted. There is flexibility in creating your daily schedule, you'll never get bored.

    Cons

It is a very challenging setting and burnout is a constant reality. Staff is often sent into the field without adequate training to meet the challenges of the hospice setting.

    Pros

Pay is pretty good, company provides good traning and advance within. Provide incentive for good work.

    Cons

Management never stays longer than 6 months. Constant turn around of staff. Company changes policies frequently difficulty learning new policies. Still does paper charting. To much on call

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listening to fellow staff members and creating a team that functions as one unit would improve pt satisfaction and reduce turnovers

    Pros

Great team loaded with caring people - in the hospice business for all the right reasons

    Cons

Corporate consists of endless micro managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be supportive and mentor your people versus badgering.

I have been working at Heartland Hospice as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

They are doing a meaningful job, sending love and provide warm care to patience. Actually they can do better. According to one of the people there, the job looks said but everyone seems happy.

    Cons

Poor training, Overworked and underplayed. All I can say is rethink about it. Lack of communication.

I have been working at Heartland Hospice full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Communication improving consistently BUT still occasionally things fall through the cracks. Good recognition from co-workers in the field BUT very little from office staff. Field staff work one (sometimes two) weekends a month.
Most office staff are easy to get along with - with very few conflicts.
Great Philosophy of Care BUT too often have failure of service

    Cons

Over-worked & Under-paid, RNCM's are often far too over-worked & not recognized for their efforts. Caseloads are far too high - resulting in poor quality of care at times and lack of continuity of care...
RNCM's spend most of their time filling out forms as this company continues to be in the dark ages - no laptops or software to streamline the IPOC or following visit notes. Administration does not seem to have a clue about what the field staff go through on a day to day basis.
Work & Life Balance seems to be a foreign concept.
Perhaps the worst mileage reimbursement in the nation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to REALLY understand what your field staff do on a day to day basis & how many hours they put in - in one day alone - let alone 5 days in a row. OFTEN recognize them - for what they do, and ensure they get the rest & rejuvenation required - thus you will be assured your staff will provide the best care.

    Pros

Working with end of life issues is life changing and very rewarding especially in patients home settings

    Cons

Vert large coverage areas. Little regard for employees suggestions and interaction with management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please pay employees what they are worth and you will keep the very best. Listen to the employees and value their input

    Pros

Heartland hires people who have the right philosophy in regards to end of life care. Not everyone in the health care field understands this type of very important care, not only for the patients, this includes the family of patients who need help letting go of a loved one.

    Cons

I have not encountered cons with this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, we will all need this type of care someday.

Former Employee - Director of Patient Services in Chadds Ford, PA

I worked at Heartland Hospice full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Working with end of life patients and their families

    Cons

Micromanagement from administrator. Once he showed up, everyone that currently worked there had quit within 4 years. Corporate only cared about the numbers and not the patients. It was all about the money. No morale among staff. People only came to office when they absolutely had too. This all happened after they were bought out by the Carlisle group. It used to be a great work place. Our team was the best in the area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't micromanage. Put patients first and employees second. It should not be all about the numbers and census.

Current Employee - Honesty Not An Option Here in Mason, MI

I have been working at Heartland Hospice full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are none! The pay stinks, the office is full of friction. And no one is held accountable for their actions in the cooperate offices

    Cons

The pay is a joke for the amount of work that goes into our patients. The gratitude cannot be measured because there is none from our home office in Mason Michigan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not apply for a position here, you will be worked and treated like a bum off of the street.
