Former Employee - General Manager/Project Director in New York, NY

I worked at Heery full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I was allowed and encouraged to assume as much responsibility as I could manage. Advancement came commensurately with the amount of responsibility I was able to sustain successfully.

    Cons

There were no cons at this stage of my career development. The compensation was fair as were the benefits. As mentioned above , the atmosphere for personal growth was present and encouraged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A presence in New York again is suggested. If that were to happen, I believe the structure of any such presence to be carefully determined to make the best of local resources and corporate support.

I have been working at Heery full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people with sense of accomplishment. Management is OK and normal employee benefits for the industry. National firm that also has design side (A/E) too.

    Cons

No room for personal advancement, management positions are occupied by 20 year professionals that are not moving. Company has not grown in size or volume

Who pays more for an admin asst (overhead) than for an Architect or Interior Designer (revenue producing)?

I worked at Heery full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

As a former employee (worked there prior to 2010), this is a company with global reach and significant projects in terms of size and presence
diverse in design, construction, planning and management opportunities
large and stable financially, focus on business
GREAT place to be if you are into Program Management or Construction Management

    Cons

design disciplines are low on the power/influence and importance scale in leaders actions and behaviors
emphasis is on big projects with weight toward program management and construction management, design heritage has slipped to second or third place
check recent salary posts in which admin assist's are paid more than architects or interior designers
large firm and subsidiary of mega firm, potential for employees to become "just another number"

I worked at Heery full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A multi-disciplinary full service nationwide company.
Great people to work with and interesting projects.
Full services with local office presence and knowledge of local markets coupled with nationwide services support are a winning combination
Large company provides opportunities to find your niche or move nationwide within the company.

    Cons

New president brought in from outside the company does not understand the culture that made Heery great. Corporate identity and knowledge being lost.
The second on-going reorganization in the past 4 years has gutted upper management.
Morale is currently low due to job security worries and the stress of all the change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat staff with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Change management: Provide better communication with staff on where Heery is headed strategically.

    I worked at Heery full-time

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits, work-life balance mostly good-sometimes not, relaxed office environment without lots of over-supervising. Leadership is knowledgeable, but uninspiring. Some really good people, mostly the older Keepers-of-Knowledge.

    Cons

Typical large company disadvantages: hard to move up, less than ideal communication between groups, even those working on the same projects. Management is trying to go in a new direction with company image to compete with pure design firms, which Heery is not. This and the current layoffs are hurting moral in a major way. IT hardware and software updates are slow to be delivered. Software training is poor, mostly on your own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect the value people bring. It's not all about money.

I worked at Heery full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good opportunities for young people, work life balance and salaries are good.

    Cons

New management is changing the organization from the old line established firm it was to try and keep up with technology changes - benefits eroding. Moving up is difficult. Leadership varies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to keep the good people you have.
