I have been working at Hein & Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great public accounting firm that doesn't work it's people to the bone. Busy season is no where near Big 4 hours, plus employees are compensated for every hour worked via straight pay. Can't find that at many other places. Reputable firm with a relaxed environment, great client mix (public and private) servicing a wide range of industries, summer work schedule with every other Friday off (not 9/80s), profit sharing, plenty of PTO, and much more.

    Cons

Health care benefits are moderate, but relatively inexpensive.

    Advice to Management

    None.

  2. Good accounting firm

    Pros

They really do things for their employees that other accounting firms don't. The people are very nice.

    Cons

The benefits are fairly expensive and the pay seems to be low.

    Advice to Management

More competitive salaries would attract better employees.

I worked at Hein & Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    * Overtime pay * Good people * Dowtown location

    Cons

    * When you start nobody tells you that to succeed in public accounting you cannot start a family. If you want to become a partner you need to put insane hours during your career. * Big 4 is really a better long-term choice for your career development * Internal politics

    Advice to Management

Misleading people to make them stay for another season is really low.

    Pros

A lot of happy hours, PTO is decent, pay is good compared to big four

    Cons

    work-life balance, high employee turnover

    Advice to Management

Invest more into the people you have and people will tend to stay longer

    Pros

The company really takes care of you and try to help you advance in your career. Managers, Senior Managers and even Partners are your mentors and you learn a lot from them, since you are not scare of asking questions and discuss topics. They listen to you if you have an idea and will incorporate that on the next engagement. As well the company has a really fun culture in which everyone helps each other and a great work/life balance. They provide you with free snacks in the break room and they sponsor various events such as Happy Hours or organizations that you want to be involved. The company is growing fast, creating a lot of opportunities in the near future.

    Cons

Compare to BIG 4 it will take longer to become a manager, after senior you are promoted to supervisor and then manager. The clients are smaller than BIG 4 mostly private clients.

    Advice to Management

Culture is nice, try to keep that as the firm grows. Would be great to have bigger clients.

I have been working at Hein & Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture at Hein is nice and the tone at the top is okay. The employees are cool but its public accounting. The Busy season is not really busy season but I am accustom to larger clients

    Cons

The clients tend to be smaller clients and you will work 2 to 3 weeks on a clients and move on to the next client. In turn would cause you to have 2 to 3 clients overlapping

    Advice to Management

    Communication and better compensation

    Pros

A fast paced environment...but the people make it completely doable. And they take VERY good care of their employees.

    Cons

Tax time is brutal...but to be expected at an accounting firm.
