Pros
it is a great place to work
Cons
you will not get more money later on, get it when you hire on!
Pros
I can have a balanced life
Cons
Computers systems are really obsolete
Advice to Senior Management
None
Pros
They are members of the American Gem Society. There are many different and reasonable price points to work with. The benefit package seems good.
Cons
Terrible commission rate ( starting at 1/2 a percent! ) , the goals are hard to obtain and unrealistic during these times. NO training, you really have to figure it all out on your own. Managers and assistant managers are given high goals, so they basically take all the sales. They really mislead me about how things are handled.
Advice to Senior Management
Management should be training their sales staff in order to build a strong team. They should never gossip about other employees and talk in detail about their personal lives and problems
Pros
The discount for employees is excellent. The close relationship between co-workers is nice. They are a very ethical and stable company, part of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio. They have recently become members of the American Gem Society, and have the latest state of the art tools for looking at and learning about diamonds. They reimburse for training upon completion.
Cons
I have found that they lie to you about promotions. They do not pay well, and don't give raises out fairly. Even if you meet and exceed your goals, they always find something to put you down about. Upper management seems to enjoy intimidating employees. They constantly change the rules on how they want you to do things. Way to much gossip and much of it is started from upper management. Constantly passing the buck when mistakes are made. They make huge deals out of minor mistakes. There is a lot of favoritism that goes on. The comission structure is a joke. They have taken away a lot of benefits and perks in the past few years.
Advice to Senior Management
Set better examples from the top down. If upper management wouldn't intimidate store management, I think it would be a better work environment.
Pros
Small, agile, ethical company. In the field, good opportunity to devlop selling skills and make a good salary in a mall setting. At the corporate office, great relationships, work-life balance, and ability to create and implement new ideas.
Cons
Corporate culture needs some work. Could be more partnership across functions to ensure success.
Pros
Training paid for by company
Single point pricing (or it used to be when I was there) made it easier to work with customers without the hassle of haggling.
Continued training available
Cons
District manager basically lies to prospective employees offering them advancement to management or large commission checks . . . none of which ever comes around. Under valued for positive contributions to the company. The new CEO is all about showing how much money she can make the company regardless of how she hurts staff to do so. Less money, less benefits, less everything except for work.
Advice to Senior Management
The sales associate IS your company. You can't expect to sell a high end product when you're only willing to pay for entry level workers. The best sales staff is looking elsewhere for better pay and a more appreciative environment. Treat your staff well . . . and then watch your sales grow!
Pros
easy to get job, nice co-workers
Cons
low pay, strict non-responsive management, silly rules
Advice to Senior Management
be more flexible
Pros
Intense product knowledge and education.
Cons
The worst manager I've had to deal with.
Advice to Senior Management
Screen carefully and look for proper management skills
Pros
Helzberg really cares about the consumer and they do try to educate and help the consumer as much as possible. Helzberg builds real relationships with its consumers and that makes it different.
Cons
Helzberg does NOT care about its employees. My manager is very rude to his employees, is not understanding nor willing to work with people. I quit my last job just so I could work here because in the interview they paint this illusion that you will be happy here (but I blame myself for that because I was unhappy with the better paying, better benefits job). THIS IS NOT TRUE. My boss would not even allow me to come in later on Sundays so I could go to Church (which another associate explained to me that it would not be a problem because they let her when she was going to church regularly). My requests for time off are NEVER approved! The commission is NOT worth the time, nor the effort, the pay could use an increase, the managers (at least where I work) could be more understanding.
Nobody here even accepts personal responsiblity for ANYTHING they do!!! My assist. manager asked me to do something, then when my boss asked why I did it, my assist. manager acted like they never told me to do it and did not understand why I did. Just to save their own skin! Another example... Whenever a coworker of mine makes an error, I just correct the error before anyone finds out. If I make an error, I get reported (for the same errors that they make)!
There is definitely favoritism within the workplace, also. I understand that each manager has their favorite employees to a certain extent, but never in my life have I ever recieved such utterly batant disrespect from a manager.
They are not understanding, do not care about your lives, or emergencies, do not care about you, and I am so tired of being treated as if I am inferior to my coworkers when I meet and exceed my store goals, I am always on time, and I am extremely proactive in the work place. I can not wait until I find another job to replace this one!
Advice to Senior Management
Please take the time to care more about your employees and their lives. I understand that you have a business to run, but understand that your employees do have lives outside of Helzberg (believe it or not - it's true). If you took the time to care, and understand, maybe your employees will have a higher job satisfaction and maybe (just maybe), people will perform better. You catch more flies with honey.
Pros
People job, fun coworkers, discount
Cons
the hours are no fun
