I have been working at Henkel

    Pros

Solid successful global company. Has multiple locations in the US in a variety of different types of business. Everything from hair care to electronic adhesives. Competitive compensation.

    Cons

HQ is in Germany. It's quite apparent Germans are given the preferred leadership positions in other countries. Commutation from corporate is inconsistent to the local sites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really listen to employee input and maybe even use some of their suggestions. Even if they come from someone who is not German.

    Pros

Fun people to work with. Easy going place, but strict on due dates. They let people manage themselves with no micromanagement. Have confidence in all employees and encourage others to get their work done.

    Cons

Sometimes there is little confrontation from managers and you will be lost on your project. Have to find help yourself on some things you are working on.

Strong brand, global company, dynamic markets - but leadership focus is myopic

I have been working at Henkel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good, work facility is gorgeous. Opportunities for job rotations domestically and internationally. Good mix of long-term employees and sharp new talent. Products are well known and liked by our customers all over the world. Company is over 130 years old, and founding family appears committed to long-term growth and success for the brands.

Company is competing in highly dynamic markets, with lots of focus on organic growth, especially internationally.

    Cons

Current company leadership appears entirely focused on "cutting to success." No current investment in personal or professional growth - yet another year of canceled training and severely reduced T&E. Service is intentionally sacrificed in favor of reducing operational expenses - they don't even deny it anymore.

Very little strategic responsibility outside headquarters in Dusseldorf. Regional leaders are expected to execute, not question or offer alternative solutions. Many of the leaders in Dusseldorf are "home grown" and lack the breadth of experience of leaders from other regions.

Worst is the "flavor of the month" leadership focus. Supply Chain, Safety, Lean, ITIL, ISO, Six Sigma, Agile ... all had a day in the sun and then died on the vine due to lack of commitment from the top.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read some leadership books and realize that investing in process maturity, leadership development, employee satisfaction, and operational effectiveness will get you the long-term growth and profits that you desire. Stick to commitments ... no more "flavor of the month" initiatives.

Implement 360º reviews of leaders ... some people in leadership need development or need different roles.
