    I worked at Henrico County Public Schools for more than a year

    Pros

    Overall I felt my administrators were competent and supportive, and the staff members were generally positive about their jobs. All of my co-workers were great, particularly my department chair. As a new teacher, I received a lot of support. The PTSA was small, but active. However, I know that there were morale issues in other schools.

    The pay was decent and allowed me to live comfortably in suburban Richmond. I'm single and had no trouble paying rent on a nice, one-bedroom apartment. I know some teachers (with kids) struggled to pay the bills and took on second jobs, but I think that's just the nature of the profession, unfortunately.

    Cons

    There seemed to be a disparity between schools in the West End and schools in the East End. West End schools (from more affluent, whiter neighborhoods) were often perceived as better, and many had newer facilities and more technology. My students came from low-income neighborhoods, with fewer resources and more issues, which could make them a challenge to work with.

    Every school is different, but my school needed serious maintenance. Every time there was snow or heavy rain we'd have major leaks, often leading the ceiling to collapse in places. Some classrooms still had the original 1970s carpeting. Rumor had it the building wasn't due for renovations for another decade! However, some other schools were brand new.

    Every high-school kid has a laptop. This may sound like a good idea, but generally it's not. The computers are just distractions and the kids don't take care of them.

    The budget for professional development was cut, and the county no longer pays for classes to renew your license.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Distribute resources better. Spread out those smart boards! Stop building new schools when your current schools are falling apart! If you give more resources to your Central/East End schools, you will help dispel the myth that West End schools are superior.

    There are too many new initiatives. You don't need to try ten new ideas at once every year.

    Technology is not God. Don't waste your money on giving every kid a laptop. Instead, buy a few laptop carts for every school. Then use the money you saved to invest in something that will make a difference, like a new roof for the school or professional development for the teachers.

    Pros

    An opportunity to help kids grow
    A pension retirement program backed by many employees
    Time off during student breaks

    Cons

    Management and staff routinely harass employees.
    Harassment includes:
    * Punative workloads
    * Public humilation
    * Derogatory homophobic name-calling
    * Dishonest review process that does not include reviews for management
    * Poor oversight of management
    * Lack of team building
    * No tranparency or communication of organizational goals
    * Pays far under market

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The culture must change to be inclusive, safe, and respectful of minority classes of people.
    If institutional change is not possible, out-sourcing staff can remove the responsibility.

    I have been working at Henrico County Public Schools

    Pros

    Henrico county schools have a lot of resources available to both teachers and students which help make lesson more interesting and fun for children.

    Cons

    Lunches and planning periods are not equally divided amongst all teachers in Henrico County. I find myself having a 15 minute lunch break and no time to run to the bathroom many days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Management should make sure all teachers are recognized for their efforts and hard work and not exclude elective teachers. Also make sure all teachers have equal planning, duty, and lunch periods.

    I worked at Henrico County Public Schools

    Pros

    Principal and administrative staff are good people but they're just treading water trying to stay ahead of NCLB's unfunded mandates. There are some very good people teaching kids in these schools and some of the schools are clean and well equipped.

    Cons

    some schools-mine included--are in poor condition, dirty. HIgh staff turn over. MOney is distributed unevenly. Schedules are inconsistent and for some reason special area teachers get inordinate amounts of planning time while regular ed teachers barely get planning times 4 out of 5 days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Create fair and uniform schedules. Insist on clean buildings. Provide adequate money for classroom supplies.
