I have been working at Hensel Phelps Construction

    Pros

Great people to work for. Their are a lot of training and learning experiences that they offer at and away from work.

    Cons

Hensel Phelps as a hole are a great bunch of people but the pay stinks and they dangle a so called a golden carrot to keep people their for a long time. The way they are structured makes it very hard to move up.

    Advice to Management

Pay your people what they are worth.

    Pros

    Great company reputation
    Excellent national presence

    Cons

    Long working hours
    Nonexistent work life balance
Management is very old school. Somewhat resistant to change and sometimes even racist.

    Advice to Management

Do not just talk about work-life balance, embrace it! enforce it!

    Pros

HP is a great company to work for that demonstrates the values that all other companies should hope to follow. They take safety and quality seriously, and at the same time maintain a positive workplace.

    Cons

As with any construction company they have a few employees that should not be brought back onto other projects.

    Pros

I enjoy my job primarily because of the people I am surrounded with. There is always opportunity to further your knowledge of the construction industry by working at Hensel Phelps. HP strongly believes in training, training and more training to develop employees' skills. The company is also employee-owned, presenting many great benefits.

    Cons

Long hours, very heavy workload. Salary is low compared to other similar companies.

    Advice to Management

Management always emphasizes benefits and perks of the employee-ownership aspect of the company. However, if you have been working here for less than 5 years, you can forget about any additional compensation or benefits based off performance. New hires (Field Engineer and Office Engineer) will be "hazed" for 5 years until experiencing any significant raise. Even after the 5 year point, salary+benefits is hardly comparable to similar companies. This is the sole reason I plan to leave the company.

    Pros

There is a reason the company has the lowest employee turnover rate in the industry. Employees stay longer than any other peer group. It truly felt like a family. I miss my HP days and coworkers.

    Cons

Yes, you work long hours and have to move; it is a tough business.

    Advice to Management

You will never make everyone happy. Keep working to improve. It takes time.

    Pros

Long term benefits pay off. Lots of responsibility early in career. Interesting, large projects. Employee owned.

    Cons

People say work/life balance, but that's a struggle anywhere. If you get your work done, then you'll be fine drawing the line and going home when it's time.

    Advice to Management

Take time to talk with the lower level employees, you'll get valuable feedback.

    Pros

Great benefits. Hired on after successful completion of internship which yielded a vast knowledge of the industry. Company work path is that of one who must earn their right to advance. Company believes with hiring within the company. Company going through transition to better serve its employees and provide activities to boost moral. Co-workers are very knowledgeable and offer great advise and training to their employees.

    Cons

Advancement in the company can take longer than expected. First 4-5 years of employment equate to a trial period where they can, or you can, leave the company and not get the benefits they praise about. Younger employees should be treated better to develop a mindset to stay with the company.

    Advice to Management

Consider offering promotions sooner to allow for greater advancement within the company. Provide ESOP benefits sooner than five years after hire and provide better communication to through the chain of command.

    Pros

Good work experience on a variety of projects and a great health insurance plan. If you like to travel then it's the perfect place to move around alot.

    Cons

    - The pay rate is very low for fe/oe. You Will be working to just pay bills and financial commitments.
    - Predominantly white male company; If you looking for a Diverse staff then that's not the place for you. Minority barely exists and where they do, they are seldom promoted.
    - expect to work 60 hrs minimum per week and u will only get paid for 40hrs
    - Promotions take a long time so you Will be working hard for low wages for at least 5yrs before you promoting where u Will get decent compensation
    - old boys club
    - High labor turnover; people quit all the Time and they have a problem retaining good workers
    - The managers are the only ones getting the real benefit of the company; most people especially Women don't make it past PS/PM

    Advice to Management

-Pay attention to employees complaints, pay fe/oe better salaries, and increase the staff to reduce work load per person. That might help retain your workers
    - Employ and promote more minoritIes to improve the company image
    - stop promising promotions to try and retain employees
