I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs

    Pros

    Pleasant and professional colleagues. Um.

    Cons

No pay increase for five years, a shrinking, undervalued and demoralised workforce, an appraisal system with a fixed quota of 10% "Must Improves" every year, irrespective of actual performance,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drop the performance management system and see what valuing your staff can achieve

I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Lot of training opportunities, technical qualification paid for, Hotel travel and subsistence fully paid. Can work any 8 hours between 7 am to 7 pm. Free parking.

    Cons

Comparatively less wages than private sector. Promotion depends on the opportunities which could take on average 3-6 yrs. ( That is for some one who is good)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quick promotion would help retain young talent.

I worked at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Huge analytical team spread across the country with many talented people
    - Team Leaders keen that OR analysts use technical + policy skills on projects
    - Budget Work (Policy) can be very interesting and gives detailed understanding of how policies are developed and analytical findings feature in Budget reports.

    Cons

    - If your manager is non-OR then progression/career development can be difficult
    - Pay freeze and low pay rises year on year makes it demotivating
    - Some technical projects dont't progress beyond your clients inbox.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Showcase OR talent to clients and speed of implementation.
    - Ensure OR analysts in early career have an OR manager only.

I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good training, great colleagues, good flexible working options, varied work experience and really interesting work

    Cons

Constant poorly managed change, reducing terms and conditions, poor quality management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start really valuing your people and expertise, and do something about the lack of diversity in your senior leadership

I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked in KAI (knowledge, analysis and intelligence). It is the brain box of HMRC and HMT.
You are involved in technical analysis and there is a place for Economist, Statistician, OR and generalists. People are great and good. They also pay more than the average civil service.

    Cons

Hard to get promoted at senior level. At senior level, they don't value technical abilities, they just look at how good you can talk and soft skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value people analytical/technical more for promotion otherwise there will be a massive brain drain.

    Pros

Never dull as no two days are the same.
    Pay is relatively good.
    Challenging work
Work to your ability not just the grade

    Cons

Performance management process is very bureaucratic and time consuming
    Creativity is not generally encouraged
Pay starting to slip to far behind the private sector ad no longer offset by benefits

I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Work life balance is excellent, pay is not too bad, opportunity to work with Ministers

    Cons

Morale is low and overall culture is too relaxed and undemanding, strong likelihood of pay freeze and reduction in other benefits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on better training for middle management and resist the constant move towards centralised control
