I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

This is a worthwhile job, policing the tax system. Interesting work, good local management and great colleagues. There is a decent work/life balance (within reason, hours are flexible)

    Cons

No pay rise in the last 5 years and none for the foreseeable future. A steady erosion of terms and conditions. A punitive performance management regime which determines that, no matter how well the organisation performs, 10% of each grade must be marked as failures. Senior management who are totally out of touch with their staff (and even with reality)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff. Be honest with your staff. Trust your staff. Fight for your staff - yes I know the PMR system has been politically imposed but you do not have to show off how brutally you can impose it.

I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

They do flexi time, so you can work an extra hour a day and build up some extra leave, but this could change of course

    Cons

You can build up the leave, but then they don't let you take it, in a staff survey HMRC came 104 out of a 104 gov depts they are the worst yo work for

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening, stop having meetings about meetings, be visible, try communicating with staff give them a pay rise 5 years is long enough
