I worked at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs

    Pros

The experience you gain looks good on your CV. You do quite a broad variety of work so gain experience in all of the steps required to prepare for hearings. There's a admin support team which saves you doing a lot of photocopying.

    Cons

The working atmosphere is really unfriendly and unpleasant. Certain lawyers feel they are too superior to talk to paralegals. There is a clear divide in the office and the general morale is low. There are many problems in this team which need to be addressed. Staff turn-over is extremely high.

I worked at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent orientation training for new starters, good buddying system for new starters, lovely people in the office to work with, nice office building.

    Cons

After the orientation, things got a lot tougher. Clunky computer systems and long, complex call type procedures made it an uphill battle sometimes to give tax credits callers the answers to their questions quickly. Pressures for short call times and more calls to be handled evidently caused rushing and errors - reflected in a number of external reviews of the organisation. Errors generated repeat calls from frustrated clients and increased staff time spent per client - but overall time per client wasn't measured. To keep staff on the phone answering more calls, staff were not released for sufficient training and upskilling on new procedures, which further aggravated issues with call errors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at this organisation several years ago now, and I know there were already some initiatives to increase the focus on call response quality in addition to call response quantity. Customers whose enquiries are handled properly may take a few minutes extra this time - but they won't call back again - and they'll actually receive correct tax credits - saving the British government a lot of money.

I have been working at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work life balance is excellent, pay is not too bad, opportunity to work with Ministers

    Cons

Morale is low and overall culture is too relaxed and undemanding, strong likelihood of pay freeze and reduction in other benefits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on better training for middle management and resist the constant move towards centralised control

I worked at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs

    Pros

Lots of employees - easy to hide and not do much work. Good time off policy too. People were not bad.

    Cons

The company is obsessed with LEAN management and refining processes. I wish management would just leave things are they are not not change things for the worse!

I worked at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs

    Pros

The time was flexi-time so you could take up to three days off in a month without taking it off of your annual leave so long as you built up the hours on top of your core 36 hour week.

    Cons

Some people were lazy as in the public sector there is no company owner or corporate suit to keep all in line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Would be better if the hard work of employees is noticed and those who sit at their desk and pretend to work all day should be spoken to
