Pros
empowerment on sale tasks
creativity meetings
Cons
corporate sales with few representatives
Advice to Senior Management
increase the size of the sales and marketing department
Increase the budget on advertisment campaign
Pros
Learn how to Sale in high pace stressful environment.
30 days off a year.
Abuse really nice cars on a daily basis
Cons
Well almost every aspect of this job was terrible but here is a short list.
1) Long work hours 7:30am to 6:00pm Mon-Fri open 9am - 1pm Sat.
2) Zero work life balance
3) Managers are promoted on the "Good ole Boys standard" if you fit in it is great but if you don't good luck.
4) High stress environment. You must sale to meet your numbers. You have to satisfy your accounts and customers that accounts abuse.
5) Constantly have to call and fight with a paying 3rd party (insurances).
6) Customers are generally in a bad mood because their only car is in the shop and you have to sale a ridiculously expensive insurance package that they don't need.
7) Low staffed locations so you have to do literally everything from cold call sales, in office manager duties and even wash/vacuum cars out while in a suit and tie.
8) 12 dollar and hour wage starting. Assistant manager makes 13 dollars an hour but bonuses off the locations. Location mangers make 32,000 salary and get to take a car home every night. But not the same car every night so good luck planning a trip after work.
9) This a a company that banks off the fact that they will have a 98% turnover rate. They bring you in and use and abuse you.
10) To get this job you have to have a college degree. You don't need one they just require it.
Advice to Senior Management
I have no advice other than sale out the company and forget you treated your employees about as equally as a Nike factory.
Pros
Once you reach manager you get car privileges. Other than that stay away.
Cons
They expect you to run your branch with the bare minimum number of employees. Then when someone is sick or is on vacation you are very short handed. They also change the bonus structure every quarter, and each time it is changed for the worse. Last year when the company realized that the cost of the vehicles was cheaper thus enabling managers to receive a good bonus they had to change the bonus mid-quarter just so they wouldn't have to pay the managers as much in bonus.
Advice to Senior Management
Start caring about your employees and stop treating them like finite resources that you burn through then discard.
Pros
Healthcare coverage was above average and different shifts were available to work.
Cons
Too much emphasis placed on seniority and not enough placed on performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Change the seniority structure and make everyone more accountable for their attitudes and job performance.
Pros
You get a lot of time off right away. It starts out at 10 Vacation days and 5 Floating Holidays which is better than i've seen anywhere else. After the first year and through the fifth year it jumps up to 15 Vacation Days and 5 Floating Holidays which is again, great!
It's a great place to get your feet wet about how to run a business. '
It's also a great way to learn how publicly traded companies work to increase revenue and reduce cost throughout every year.
You learn a lot about working with your employees and other branches to accomplish objectives.
You get a lot of variety in terms of sales experience, including business-to-business and retail sales.
Cons
Managers are essentially Mules at Hertz. They are forced to work a large number of hours every week. Typically between 50-60. There is no life outside of Hertz since you will be essentially get up every day, go to work, get home eat dinner and go to bed. You get a lot of vacation time, which is great but you don't get to use it.. especially as a manager. Your always told to suck it up since the area is always way understaffed. Your told to go out and grow a business when you can barely manage what you have due to staffing. In order to try to accomplish that goal you have to short your location and hurt customer service. This results in upsetting what your trying to do to grow the business. On top of it all your expected to do more with limited staffing (2 to 3 people) than the competition (generally Enterprise) does with 5 or 6 people.
If a holiday falls on a weekend hourly staff get paid for it and even though management is told they are supposed to get a day off for that holiday they are encouraged not to take it at the branch level. All the while the upper management above you gets the next work day or the day before off.
You never have the fleet you need when you need it.
Moving cars is sometimes impossible due to staffing and hours reductions.
Your always being told to cut something and still increase your revenue and profit.
Advice to Senior Management
Staff your locations better. If upper management is expecting location management to pick up slack for staffing, then they should help with that slack. Dont tell your employees they can't take a day off when you can take off all the time you want. Just because you pay a salary to managers doesn't mean you can force them to work all day everyday. It just alienates them and makes them hate coming to work. Every manager i've ever talked too says the same thing. It doesn't help when we are underpaid by about $15,000 for a similiar position with a different company. So don't use our salary as a way of saying that we should work more. If you pay a person to run a location you should pay them more than $13/hr. Also, hertz needs to put more money into marketing. You never see a hertz commercial on anything. Most people only know about hertz at the airport. That needs to be changed and a focus on marketing the replacement business needs to happen too. Hertz tells managers to go do it which is fine, but it isn't practical to expect us to do that when all we have learned how to do is sell to a customer at a counter and keep a business profitable. If you want managers to market you need to put money into that as well. Try working with a marketing company, because right now hertz is at a real disadvantage on this front. Enterpise buys marketing information so they don't shoot blindly into the wind. Hertz should do the same. they should then use that information to solicite the businesses with potential of helping hertz grow its brand. Lastly, Hertz needs to realize that the most important people to its success are its people. Too much time and effort is put into cutting cost when more needs to be put into making this a better place to work. If you want results, pay your people and give them the staffing needed to allow everyone to have a chance to grow. Don't threaten everyone and tell them how bad they are doing. Focus on being a positive company and working wtih your employees to help market and grow.
Pros
They usually hire up from within so there opportunities for advancement. The discount on rentals and benefits is also a huge plus. They're also very accommodating in terms of last minute emergencies/ vacation time.
Cons
Can be vague sometimes in terms of job description. Late nights and weekend work may be required although it's not too time consuming.
Advice to Senior Management
It would help potential employees to be very upfront with the job description on a daily basis, as well as a timely and accurate way of responding to candidates.
Pros
very flexible schedule and lots of customer contact. great job for those looking to get into customer service or sales.
Cons
Bonus structure is difficult to achieve. Advancement is possible but seems to stop and Branch manager. District seems possible, but reaching the actual corporate level seems pretty challenging
Advice to Senior Management
Management seems to be pretty good at communicating what is going on in company. at the end of each quarter each employee is encouraged to watch the corporate web cast for employees. this was very nice to know that the company wanted all of its employees to be on same page as management
Pros
Discount on rent a cars?
Cons
amount of hour, little pay
company is backwards
benifits package is horrible
company is antiquated
dont need college to do this job
Advice to Senior Management
better healther care package, update systems, update base pay structure
Pros
Flexible schedule! Good Benefits, its an alright environment
Cons
lack of employees concerns they may have
Pros
The best reasons to work at Hertz are a fast paced environment, good co-workers, and sales experience. Working hard is generally recognized.
Cons
You want to make it to Branch manager. The advantage of being branch manager is you get to drive a Hertz car, that may also be a downside.
Advice to Senior Management
I would try to improve the sales incentives . The current program is not providing adequate motivation given the difficulty level in selling the protection packages.
