Former Employee – worked at Hess Corporation
Pros – Prestigious name, nice offices and equipment.
Cons – Attendance is taken at 8am. If you are not at your desk working, you are marked late, even if you were getting a cup of coffee. Treat employees like children. Management is very clicky so if you are not part of the in crowd, you might as well be invisible.
Advice to Senior Management – Treat your employees fairly and you will reduce the stress levels. Also, you can't expect people to work 24/7 and making relatively low wages compared to other companies in the area.

Pros – * Great people
* Great benefits
* Good annual bonus structure
* Management promotes good work/life balance
Cons – * Promotions are very political
* Raises are based on budget and promotions don't guarentee bigger raise
* Communication between group/divisions is rare which means duplication of work is done and hard for IT to support
Advice to Senior Management – Create a stronger structure so that business needs are top priority and not just the people with enough political weight get what they want when they want it.

Pros – The insurance benefit starts on day one. Which is good because the stress and long hours keep you sick. Other than that there really are no pro's.
Cons – With staffing hour reductions the manager must plan to work at least 12 hours a day or more. Ther is no support from district managers unless you are on target to receive a company visit. Then you will work non stop to fix every thing and be allowed to spend money for supplies and materials to bring things up to standards. The customers even comment that someone important must be comming.
Advice to Senior Management – Give support to store management. Give needed payroll hours so employees are not left in buildings alone. Stay focused on the important issues in retail and do not change directions each month. Bring back the HESS trucks and drivers. They symbolized the company's commitment to quality and reinforced its values.

Pros – The industry seems strong, and Hess in particular has a great protfolio.
Cons – Poor leadership abilities from Senior Management in M&R. The compensation is not great for the area. Little regard for experience and knowledge from the outside.
Advice to Senior Management – Recognize the potential of your employees. There are many who are capable and need to be given the opportunity to suceed.

Pros – Many of the workers do a good job at completing tasks together. If you let management know you are interested in moving up the ladder, they will work with you to get you where you want to be.
Cons – As with any job, you have the "gossip mongrols" as well as lack of initiative with employees. Sometimes management doesn't do a great job of nipping the problem in the bud, and this can create even more conflict with employees.
Advice to Senior Management – Do you best to curtail problems as they arise. Because if you don't, you will have some bitter employees. I've witnessed this myself in my own store.

Pros – Compensation is great. Great people, you'll have the opportunity to be a big fish in a small pond. Fortune 100 organization with family feel. I've been with the company 3 years and have been promoted once and already in conversations about my next step
Cons – Not a lot of diversity, but its getting better
Advice to Senior Management – Look for more diversity from a Gender, Age and experience perspective

Pros – They walk the walk. The Hess values of Integrity, Performance, Social Responsibility, an Independent Spirit, Value Creation, and emphasis on People are being put into effect each and every day.
Cons – Stock options and/or profit sharing don't go very far down the ladder.
Advice to Senior Management – You're on the right track. The past 5 years have been great. We're well on the way to 1st quartile. A suggestion: I've worked for a company which gave stock options to every single employee. The feeling of joint ownership and pride, as well as striving for excellence which were derived from those options, is priceless.

Pros – There are alot of qualified Hess employees at all levels of this organization. Interacting with them has been beneficial to understanding how Hess fits into the ever-changing energy field. The company surveys other competitors in the industry on a yearly basis to keep their benefits competitive so they are able to retain their valued employees
Cons – It is difficult to maintain the work/life balance at this company because of the demands that are placed upon you. This is a twenty four hour a day job because you are always connected with your blackberry.
Advice to Senior Management – Consider re-evaluating how far you spread your management teams. They have a lot on their plates.

Pros – Retail sites with Cstores are clean, modern and generally an easy commute. Company is well known in the regional market and sales are easy to build within the community, especially when taking over an underperforming unit. Corporation is US owned, well branded with the Hess holiday toy tradition, has positive public image.
Cons – District Mgrs and Marketing Reps are focused more on micromanaging details while losing sight of big picture, tend to punish rather than teambuild. Mgrs don't hold much real responsibility, must ask permission to make any changes, even for purchasing basic office supplies. Hourly employees' starting pay at minimum wage, hard to recruit and retain quality team members with a poverty level wage.
Advice to Senior Management – Don't drag store managers to meaningless "team meetings" where you publicly criticize managers in front of their peers, teambuilding starts with working together to show others how successful managers operate their units. No one benefits when derision is the sport of senior management. Hawaiian shirts and leis don't mask lack of substance at these sessions.

Pros – Hess is a great company with a strong E&P leasdership team which is driving the organisation in the right direction. The asset portfolio is well managed and as the song says, "the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades". The work varies depending on the group you belong to but there are plenty of opportunities. The company is very serious about social responsibility issues and communicates well with its workforce. Overall E&P focuses on providing the best technology and work enviroment. However as with any E&P company, the Petrotechs and G&G staff get the best of everthing. The back-office and support staff get the leftovers, but their leftovers aren't too shabby!
Cons – There is plently of work to go around which means that for some the work / life balance is way out of sync. Others seem to just "clock in and clock out" which is irritating as senior management take too long to address those. We need more experienced and qualified personnel not just warm bodies. There is speculation about pending retirements of some of the leadership team which does rasie concerns. Can the next level step up? If we all have too step up, will it be recognised? The management structure is pretty flat so don't expect a promotion after a few years, its a weighting game. Recognition for going above & beyong is almost non existent.
Advice to Senior Management – Just because it looks effortless doesn't mean it is.
