I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I am surrounded by smart people and doing engaging work that accelerates learning and builds expertise. Compensation and benefits are good compensation. There are many learning opportunities for those who seek them..

    Cons

Internal processes are obstacles to productivity. EVERYTHING is a negotiation for someone else's time or budget, Job goals handed down are unrealistic. With new culture, if you seek superior job rating and financial benefit, you will forfeit a personal life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assure that all goals are truly SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) and not out of reach. Fix management of the marketing budget.

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Fantastic learning environment where career advancement is possible.

    Cons

You have to be tough, go for it and work hard to get that advancement, but that is true anywhere you go. If you are looking for an easy ride you're not going to find at any company. So if you are going to work hard, this is the place to do it!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of discounts. Developer Performance is not part of your rating.

    Cons

You are just a number. Benefits are not competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better compensation. Do not base salary increase on how the whole division does.

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I enjoyed working at HP because of the people... A big company with the feel of a family environment. HP also offers the Work From Home (WFH), or Virtual Office programs which can be beneficial for Work Life Balance.

    Cons

Some of the challenges at HP are accepting lateral moves (instead of promotions into a new position), with no pay increase, and salary freezes for years. An added negative would be the reorganization that takes place every few months, along with work force reduction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about your employees and ensure their well-being, because they are really the foundation of the company's successful.

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good discounts with other companies. Some of the lower management and co-workers do create a good work environment. Work life balance was good in many places. If you make the right friends you will do great.

    Cons

Your pay is mostly influenced by what others are paid in your group. If you have new people or under paid people in the group all the raise money goes to them. If you have top performers in your group, all the bonus money goes to them for retention. There is too much freedom (or not enough money) given to managers to control compensation. Your current pay/performance vs company targets has less to do with your compensation. The only way to get a good raise at HP is to leave the company or threaten to leave. If you stay, the money given to you will most likely be taken from the pool of money given to your group, screwing your friends in the process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stand up to upper level management. Too many managers know what is right, but are too scared to stand up for their employees.

    Metrics hell causes massive stress.

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people, intelligent products, good reputation on certain products - not so much on others. Great presence in India but that is going to bite back should the instability in that region fall through. Green and work from home for certain positions are a great benefit.

    Cons

Micrometric-centric, FTS model is a joke. Top level management not in touch with much more than metrics, educational support very limited, very political per advancement and based more on metrics than people skills among others, salaries seem low in comparison to other companies, layoffs always looming to impose fear and the lower salaries. Mark Hurd taking that golden parachute ruined this company and current top mgmt is TOO diversified to run it economically/efficiently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Loyalty to people over numbers is a must. Not all those that hit a rough spot in their life should be dispensable. Military contracts should be honored with a vengeance not thought of as a cash cow to be milked. Watch out for India based companies becoming security risks.

    Pros

Full breadth of products and solutions, good benefits, and a great work-life balance

    Cons

Need to create a better "sales first" culture; too many situations where issues need to be escalated

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
