Self directed career management verses quality service outcomes cause conflicts

Enterprise Architect (Former Employee)
Detroit, MI

I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat variety of positions across skill levels, experience, capabilities and industries with an ability to transition after a year of positive contributions / outcomes

ConsLong hours, high expectations by senior leaders can become disproportionate to compensation. Self directed career advancement requires constant management and internal networking & sponsorship.

Advice to Senior ManagementTop heavy management out of touch with service delivery ... Product lines are Too broad

People are treated as an unnecessary evil. There talent is not considered and high salaries are the first people cut.

Customer Project/Program Manager III (Current Employee)
Pontiac, MI

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time for more than 10 years

ProsWas able to work with little restriction and therefore develop a simple theory rapid delivery organization.

ConsMain emphasis appears to be to unemploy the American worker and higher less than qualified off-shore workers, even though the ratio is multiple off-shore to one US employee for productivity. Delivery to the customer does not invoke, accuracy or performance of software and services. Quality has been replaced by cheap labor.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize with more professional and qualified personnel, the performance of the deliverables is more accurate and consistant. Also, when interpertation of the specifications must be done on-shore then hand fed and continually redefined for accurate delivery off-shore there is a significant loss in profit and customer satisfication. The delivery takes longer and has more deficiences.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecide on best practices regarding common tools and processes and provide career advancement opportunities to employees.

HP - difference over the years

Software Developer (Former Employee)
Pontiac, MI

I worked at Hewlett-Packard as a contractor for less than a year

ProsCulture changed as company became more international teaching how to act with global counterparts effectively, a very useful skill. A differnet skill is needed to get things done outside of this country as there is a less willingness to take on responsibilty. Motivational factors include mentoring and coaching.

ConsWork hours are longer. Working after hours, weekends and holidays.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to reduce or balance workload so that there is more time to unwind.
