Pros
You get to work with some great people!
Cons
From the time I started at Compaq, there was uncertainty and frequent re-organizing. I was fortunate to have survived the HP merger but then had to lay off 36 people that worked for me before I was able to get my own new position in the new HP. However, after that, there were continued re-organizations and instability.
Advice to Senior Management
Hopefully, Meg Whitman can turn HP around. At some point - senior management needs to connect with their employees.
Pros
if you want a job with steady hours, not too much work and where you can change functions within the company, then HP is a great choice
Cons
too slow, each department works loosely with another. Need to talk to many different parties to convey an idea. HP doesn't like to change. People who work there are around late 40-50 years old.
Not a fun environment for young people.
Pros
- flexibility
- tech pedigree
- good on your resume
- big company, lots of opportunities for those willing to move
Cons
- in chaos these days
- no clear strategy
- teams not motivated
- talent exodus at senior levels
- HP Senior management and Board of Directors always on the news, for the wrong reasons
- employee compensation, benefits, engagement have suffered over past 5 days
- always re-organizaing
- the future is uncertain
Advice to Senior Management
Take care of your people of they will leave when they can
Pros
Cool technology, good car plan, okay benefits.
Cons
HPQ used to be a great place to work... They use to care about their employees. They are now focused on the green (dollars). They have lost their identity trying to be everything to everybody. All of the great leaders and awesome sales folks are leaving HP for better opportunities.
Pros
Technical exposure to different projects scope of clients, ability to get trainings on upcoming technologies. HP seemed willing to stay on the forefront of certain technologies, and they wouldn't hesitate to train you on relevant skills.
Cons
The salary wasn't on par for an experienced employee. Raises and bonuses were unevenly distributed, and it wasn extremely intense work environment. Ultimately it seems that HP thought the parts of the machine might be interchangeable.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay to keep your top talent. Else they will leave, as their technical skills are highly sought after. Be willing to train your employees, but when the workload increases, and you try to cut costs, pay to keep them happy.
Pros
The people here are very kind, respectful, and diverse. Great salary. Time flexibility.
Cons
Rare promotion/growth opportunities. Too relaxed culture. People stuck on "the good old days." Low morale.
Advice to Senior Management
Find ways to boost employee morale.
Pros
great people to work with.
Cons
upper mgt does not care about employees.
Advice to Senior Management
learn to respect employees.
Pros
Schedule flexibility (Come in late, Leave early, get your work done - although this can differ between positions)
Pay is pretty good for the area (60k entry level engineer)
Good collection of young employees (YEN - Young Employee Network)
Cons
Promotions are slow (seniority seems to take priority - annoying as hell)
Value Add Focus (all they want to see is what value you contribute, but people fudge numbers and pull rabbits out of hats to prove it - nothing is really ever checked)
Advice to Senior Management
Recognize employees. High value contributors should be treated as such, valuable commodities! Promote those who deserve it.
Pros
HP is involved in many different business.
Cons
Mark Hurd almost destroyed the company. It will take quite a while to rebuild trust with employees.
Pros
A place to learn computer technology.
Personal time off can be arranged.
Cons
Unfair performance rating.
No future for carreer advancement.
Poor benefits, salary is below the market., no recognition,
Advice to Senior Management
Be fair to employees, especially when rating individual performance.
Salary and benefits need to be enhanced to make employees happy and keep talents in the work force.
