I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Recently set clear directions and execute reasonably well. Constant update to employees from top management. Best in class IT infrastructure for everything under the sun (eg. HR, IT support, sales). Many opportunities for lateral job transfers. Supportive colleagues with minimal politics.

    Cons

Some IT platforms too complicated and involve long approval process. Tend to create too many job functions that overlap the same responsibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hopefully there will be less top management movement like more than 4 years ago which resulted in disruption, disillusion and loss to competition.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Global company with many opportunities (if you are in a low cost country)

    Cons

most jobs are being "best-shored" or code for sent to the cheapest country.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get to know your employees strengths and stock the "good old boy club" attitude. Having team meetings in London while laying people off is not a very good morale builder.

    Pros

If you do not get the chance to work for a real IT managed services company this can be an entry point to gain work experience.

    Cons

The Entreprise services has been acquired from Eds and is hard to see integrated with the other business units. HP is still a product company with a head time to manage services.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand better the integration hurdles and drive behaviors that support the benefits of working across BU's harvesting the values of integrated services from HW+SW and services chain.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

Flexible schedule, regular salary, decent work load.
    free tea & coffee :)

    Cons

Very hard to grow up from your position. You are employed becuase you are cheap.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don´t let your great employees leave. You can do better than that! You waist 1 year on training somebody and now you want let them go for not giving them a 5% raise so they can be happy? You have great workers and very competitive ones. Make them happy and be the best company.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

Had a great Work-life balance initially for 1st, 5-6 years. Flexible working hours , work from home etc.(however ,over the years this has reduced).
    Brand image of HP .

    Cons

Mergers and acquisitions decisions made by HP weren't all profitable, leading to its downturn(resulting in lay-offs).
HP Canada has far fewer accounts than HP US ,so getting into a billable position was a challenge.
Over the past 4 years HP's compensation/work-life balance has deteriorated. There have been salary freezes for 3 consecutive years in most departments..
Career development and Training almost non-existent due to recent cost cuts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

think about employees not just shareholders(concentrate on improving top line strategies along with bottom line)
The staffing design for most accounts in HP tends to be top heavy - this ultimately leads to HP losing out to competition. HP need to step up on LEAN MANAGEMENT.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The current CEO has been trying to get HP back into the game. She has simplified a lot of the internal non-sense paperwork. There are some sections of the company doing really interesting stuff and you can get good opportunities depending on where you live. The company provides a lot of online training to the employees.

    Cons

There is a lot of infighting in the company and the internal IT processes are incredibly stiff. More often than not you are told why something cannot be done or cannot be changed. There are a lot of differences between sites. Promotion and performance reviews are opaque and unclear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a clue from more modern companies in terms of rewards and benefits. Review and standardize your hiring practices.

Great colleagues. Decent work life balance in certain organizations. Good innovative technical work at least in growing businesses.

    Cons

Cost cuttings edicts from the top that are not in consultation with businesses.

Unfair distribution of employee strength across businesses leading to empire building.
