I have been working at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

Fellow employees are outstanding, though I notice that one of them has cleaned out his cube and doesn't appear to work here anymore.

    Cons

Went to my year-end performance review. I learned that the company is "raising the bar' for performance this year. They are "raising the bar" by bumping employees one level down from their previously achieved 2013 performance ratings. I don't know about you, but I don't think any intelligent, rational person could suggest that evaluating an employee's 2014 performance objectives by taking their 2013 results and dropping it a level constitutes "raising the bar." What this does constitute is a complete failure of management in their obligations to communicate to employees what job performance goals and metrics would be used in their performance evaluations. HP management instead chose to completely disregard all objectively obtained 2014 performance achievements in order to artificially reduce ratings and any subsequent bonuses and raises. This is very specious at best and downright disreputable and unethical at worst. I would put this one level beneath the already discredited practice formerly used by Microsoft of insisting that 10% of employees within each group must be rated as unsatisfactory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should look at their own performance metrics. How can management assert that they've met or exceeded their performance objectives when they've failed so miserably at communicating performance objectives to their employees? This is management's primary job function. I've worked for many corporations through-out the world and I've never seen anything quite like this. It is time for HP's management to man-up and start treating their employees with some semblance of dignity and respect.

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent work/life balance most of the time.

    Cons

Constant political games/reorganizing, management is generally less interested in supporting team career growth and more interested in looking good, compensation/benefits below market average across the board, internal processes are cumbersome and woefully inadequate for dealing with regular issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start worrying less about your political standing and focus more on supporting the people you work with. There is great truth in the phrase "We all win when we all win".

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

I always had a great work/life balance as I worked at home for 9 years, and traveled to client site when needed. I like working virtually and HP supplied the equipment. Health benefits/vacation/vacation buy/ are all very nice packages.

    Cons

Low salaries are the norm. I was lured in with a bonus program which resulted in few bonuses, not due to my performance. Many positions throughout the country and world are "onsite" only which limits options unless you are prepared to move without a package. Not much room for internal promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your employees for the work, time and effort given. Occasional bonuses are nice, but salaries need to increase on a more regular basis.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard

    Pros

It is a great company with awesome benefits for growth potential. Work-life Balance. People are great and very talented. Compensation is low to fair.

    Cons

Management seems disconnected. Company moral is very low since people are being laid off all the time. You never know who's next and it happens every quarter. All operations are being moved to Texas or off shore. Processes and people are very bureaucratic and slow down any development/ program progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your resources and cut the bureaucracy
