Agent (Current Employee)

I have been working at Higher One

ProsFast paced, flexible hours, good moral, open communication, company culture, fun place to work, ability to work from home, positive environment,

ConsLack of support at times, weak leadership roles at times, slow responses and acknowledgment from mgmt especially via email, lower compensation scale,

Advice to Senior Managementreexamine compensation packages, evaluate management effectiveness and effectiveness of support roles, more training, more team meeting sessions, better virtual environment would be good too.

motivating work place.

I have been working at Higher One

ProsThe culture of Higher One is one that lives its values, embraces their entreprenurial spirit and encourages innovation. It is also filled with some very smart people!

ConsNot much to say in this area. Perhaps the location. Not much in the area for lunch, must drive to downtown. The new building will have a cafeteria though.

Decent place but still needs work internally

Analyst (Current Employee)
New Haven, CT

I have been working at Higher One full-time for less than a year

Pros- Catered lunches so you don't have to worry about getting your own
- Co-workers are great to work with on projects and with teams
- Good work environment, the building and space is nice

Cons- Once you put in your notice, the company treats you differently as if you're an outsider (even after you've put a lot of hard work on projects and done your best)
- Internal politics that put certain Managers into positions where they will cover their tracks and put blame elsewhere
- People won't take responsibility of their (poor and unpleasant ) work and will take recognition when they can get some

Advice to Senior ManagementHave internal checks and balances to combat any mismanagement

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Outstanding!

Customer Care Specialist (Current Employee)
New Haven, CT

I have been working at Higher One part-time for more than 3 years

ProsThey offer the most extensive and ongoing training that I have ever received. They keep the employees abreast of all regulations, changes, and company information. The culture, benefits, and overall work environment are incredible.

ConsIt can be challenging when dealing with people who are upset about a situation. While you must hear the brunt of their anger, it is rewarding to find solutions for them. It took a long time to become a permanent employee and after two and a half years I am still only part time.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate a method to advance personnel quicker and offer more time to those who have remained loyal.

Good stepping-stone

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Buffalo, NY

I have been working at Higher One full-time for more than a year

ProsCasual dress environment, flexible work hours and location (within reason and dependent on position), exposure to many different practices and challenges in higher education

ConsLittle opportunity for advancement or even development within your position

Advice to Senior ManagementHire a consultant to teach you how to effectively motivate and manage your employees. Everyone in management are great employees and are smart, but that doesn't make them good managers or supervisors. This is a skill set that desperately needs to be developed. Also, it wouldn't hurt to consider hiring someone who specializes in talent management or a chief learning officer.
