  1. Working at HUSD Transportation is nothing short of an excellent experience.

    Pros

I feel that working at HUSD Transportation is awesome. The people there are fairly nice, the office staff and administration staff are all great people. They have fun activities and find excuses to have potlucks,

    Cons

The only downside of driving school buses is just that you are driving school buses. Basically you have work for a total of nine months and then there are the vacation days like Christmas Break, Fall Break, Spring Break and Summer Break, Generally you are not paid for these vacations so you have to fend for yourself.

    Advice to Management

There really is nothing to say other than to keep up the good job of running the show.

    Pros

    -middle class suburbia
    -students generally respectful of authority
    -parents responsive to contacts
    -supportive and friendly coworkers
    -positive climate
    -newer buildings and technology
-definitely worked in both better schools and far, far worse schools
-decent salary- not far behind some of the highest paid districts in the state
--salary increases by credit hour, one by one, not 8 or 15 hour "steps", so more immediate payoff for pd
-no cost for benefits/ insurance for employees (just family, dental, and optical)

    Cons

    -class sizes of 35-40
-budget cut after budget cut (state cut, failed initiatives on ballot, new funding formula for charters)
-definite favoritism in every aspect (jobs, assignments, classrooms, supplies), often at the expense of less vocal and less favored teachers
-paper is obsessed over and rationed, often have to buy own supplies (expos, etc)
-lack of smooth operating procedures- any requests to admin need constant follow up, technology issues unresolved, secretaries and admin overworked, lack of "we value you and take care of you" atmosphere- more of a "fend for yourself"
-maintenance and custodial is poor (room vacuumed only every two months)
-community/ parents given too much weight in decision making, too much access to the top admin and board
-teachers not a part of decision making process in school level decisions

    Advice to Management

Parents need to pick up more costs, like sports, student parking, class supplies (i.e. art class fees, textbook fees)- it is ridiculous that the district is subsidizing these things while cutting back on supplies like paper and tape. Paper is necessary to doing our jobs well. Paper initiatives not well received by faculty.

put budget issues on ballot during even numbered years, when more of the general population votes (and not just the senior citizens)

Hire more admin from outside the district, who have more experience at running things smoothly.

    Pros

In a community that is mostly community driven and cares about schools.
    Good connections with business partners

    Cons

Employee supports is very limited. Teachers often do not have time to meet together to work on common curriculum, even though that is the expectation. Teachers are often expected to find and acquire teaching products and resources.
Community often overrules decisions of various administrators in districts.
District administrative decisions are often driven by friendships and relationships.
    Looming budget cuts.
    Very high teacher turnover
As an employee, little to no career advancement. Department chairs do not receive any extra compensation or benefits for leadership position. Not campus leadership positions.

    Advice to Management

Focus on supporting young teachers is important as this population makes up high percentage of work force. Teachers are often seen as tools, not as people.

    Pros

Leadership in HUSD is knowledgable and supportive

    Cons

Community sometimes has stronger decision making power than the district.

    Advice to Management

    Great job for our students.

I worked at Higley Unified School District

    Pros

Some great teacher, good facilities, strong technology

    Cons

Little room for "out of the box" thinkers. Non supportive teachers to special needs students. Special needs teachers at the bottom of the pecking order. No real incentive for regular classroom teachers to make accommodations needed.

    Advice to Management

Provide more incentive for teachers who are willing to try new things and innovative ideas. Be open to different ideas and creative thinking.
