I have been working at Hillel International full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - decent benefits (cell phone reimbursement, comp time, vacation time)
    - flexible schedule
    - wonderful emotional support from sensitive coworkers

    Cons

This was my first peek into a truly dysfunctional nonprofit work environment. We would have weekly meetings brainstorming how to get more engaged college students, usually concluding that their parents should have raised them more Jewish from birth. I was hired and was never given a work space. I worked from home 6/7 months I was employed. Worse off, the students I was supposed to be engaging didn't have a traditional hang space, either. We would meet in drafty Starbucks and I'd end up apologizing there was nowhere else to go. It was hard to sell them on the idea of Hillel with no product to show.

    - no leadership/unified vision
    - unattainable questions and goals posed like: "how do we make Hillel cool?", "where are all the Jewish students?"
    - tension/toxic atmosphere created by bleak conditions and unhappy staff and students

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Goals of simply engaging Jewish students is unrealistic and unattainable. Pick a cause, like recycling or eliminating human trafficking, and focus efforts on that.

I have been working at Hillel International part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic community, great inclusion for all, and a lovely environment. I always feel welcome as a minority.

    Cons

Just some things about working here while not being Jewish... sometimes things can be difficult to understand. I learned quickly, however.

I have been working at Hillel International part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible, understanding and a fantastic team to work with. This is by and far my favorite job I've ever worked. I am happy to come to every shift I work here.

    Cons

The hours are limited due to need and work study restrictions so it is hard to live on without secondary income from some source. Can be left with a lot of idle time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Everything is great, no complaints.

I worked at Hillel International full-time

    Pros

    Staff was friendly and team-oriented.

    Cons

    Limited personal growth opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is something that impacts many Jewish organizations - entry/mid level employees are not compensated enough for skill and time given to the organization. This is not specifically for Hillel in general but for many Jewish agencies.

I have been working at Hillel International full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great place for an entry level position to learn group and engagement work with college students. You will work 12 hour days, seven days a week but will get great programming and organizational experiences.

    Cons

Hi burnout. Low wages. Hard to balance personal and work life. Very hard for staff with families.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hillel International gives very little support to the local units. They provide no money and their resources are stretched and they have gone thru so much staff themselves. Their cental body in Washington is ineffective, bloated with staff who provide little real support.
