I worked at Hillsboro, OR full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people that work at the City of Hillsboro are great. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. In some departments its really like a second family. Hillsboro has a tradition of promoting from within, which can be a good thing most of the time.

    Cons

As with any organization, it has its quirks. Some people are dead weight, others are super stars. As long as you stay away from the many episodes of drama, you'll be fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Dear Management,

Please consider what the next generation of leadership should look like at the City and in the region and implement a better plan to develop and promote these people.

I have been working at Hillsboro, OR full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

One of the few financially stable cities due to strong growth despite the recession, therefore, job security is high. However, new management is taking more financial risks. Job satisfaction will be highly dependent on the quality of your immediate supervisor.

    Cons

Increasing levels of layers of management makes it difficult to get decisions made and act on opportunities. More decisions are being made for political reasons. Important to be within a department that will allow training and advancement within the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Organization is becoming increasingly top-heavy, reactionary and process oriented. Management has differing opinions which makes it difficult for workers to navigate process in order to complete their job.
