Things could be a lot better.

Substitute Teacher (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsFlexible schedule. If you substitute teach at a school enough then it allows you to get to know the teachers, students, administration, and staff.

ConsTraining was only available in June in order to continue as a substitute teacher for the upcoming school year. No promotions are available unless you're lucky enough to get hired as a full time teacher. There are times when students misbehave and there isn't much you can do about it. Every now and then you will come across teachers or staff who don't treat you in a professional manner.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more substitute teachers that are certified to teach a chance at being hired full time.

Don't rock the boat in the gotcha County.

    Teacher (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsBenefits. Not the best but better than most. There is training available but on your own time. There is no pay for these trainings. Time off on most holiday's.

ConsTrainings are expected of you even though their is no pay. Leadership is questionable. The Gates Evaluations System is destroying Hillsborough County Schools. The morale is at an all time low because of it. Many principals use the evaluations system to weed out teachers they don't want. A lot of propaganda of the evaluation system is presented to the school board by the Superintendent. Some of the school board is beginning to see beyond the superintendent. Teaching in this county used to be a dream come true. You felt like you were making a different with students. Now it is a nightmare. If you are a Special Ed. Teacher don't come to Hillsborough Co. Schools unless you like stress and blame for problems beyond your control.

Advice to Senior ManagementFace reality and get rid of Bill Gates and his millions. He is a school reformer that is trying to make millions off public schools. Get rid of the Superintendent that is owned by Bill Gates and other Reformers. Once that is done then listen to TEACHERS on what really needs to be done to improve public school.

    Focused on Achievement

    Teacher (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsThe district does a great job of training most administrators to focus on giving teachers the training needed so students will achieve. There is a big push for funding for technology which really helps student engagement as well.

ConsTraining pay has been cut drastically and some trainings are unpaid.

Advice to Senior ManagementRestore training pay to a level that makes it worth the employee's time. We already do so much work off the clock that it is only fair to pay us for training.

A Rewarding Job But Low Paying and Difficult.

Substitute Teacher (Former Employee) Plant City, FL

ProsI enjoyed working with kids of all ages.

ConsThere were very few benefits except a retirement plan.

Advice to Senior ManagementWish there was some way substitute teachers could apply their experience to becoming a teacher if they so chose and that there would be a path to greater education and benefits without there being large out-of-pocket expenses and lack of guidance.

    Great work environment

Special Education Aide -- Paraprofessional (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsSteady schedule. Can have benefits if full-time permanent position. Weekends and holidays off and summer break. Great work environment if you love the type of work that you are doing. Very rewarding work.

ConsVery low compensation, almost minimum wage. For a position asking for college experience the pay is very low. Upward mobility and reapplication system (to move to other jobs) is very difficult. Most positions for aides and attendants are non-permanent. Very little if any training on what the job entails and what should be done. Often requires working outside normal hours for no pay and no "Comp Pay" if you are not a permanent employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow attendants and aides the opportunity to become permanent employees with benefits. Raise the pay not only for aides but teachers and other employees.

Pays very little for the amount of experience that employees have.

Teacher Aide (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsSummers and major holidays off. Health insurance and discounts from various associations.

ConsMost positions are 10 month only, holiday pay comes out of previous paychecks. Do not receive a raise every year, only when funding permits.

Advice to Senior ManagementArgue for better pay of employees.

    High School Math Teacher

High School Teacher (Current Employee) Plant City, FL

ProsWorking with good students who are interested in the content of the courses THEY selected to take.

ConsWorking with students who do not desire to be eductated

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of insisting that employees take the responsibility, tell the parents to be good parents and to be involved in their children's educations. We provide them the tools to do this, and then give them a backup plan so they don't have to do anything except answer a telephone call.
