I worked at Hillyard full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

My experience was a terrific one. All the employees were friendly and helpful and it was wonderful to interact with the customers.

    Cons

Length of the commute. I drove 20 miles one way to get to my place of employment. Some of the drive was on the freeway so that wasn't so bad, but the remainder was through town which was congested with traffic.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management is to keep on doing what you do. They were kind and helpful and made the atmosphere of the workplace like a family.

I have been working at Hillyard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management leaves you alone. You have a lot of freedom.

    Cons

There is NO MONEY TO BE MADE AS A SALES REP HERE. PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THERE FALSE PROMISES. If you're willing to make 80K after working here for 20 years, then this job is for you. Only the older reps stay, they can't keep any of the new Hires.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to pay entry level salaries then higher entry level Reps. Also Times have changed you also need to change with the time.

I have been working at Hillyard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Family owned, stable, hope they are around for another 100 years.

    Cons

I really can't think of any major problems. Corporate really doesn't micro manage. Know your goals. It's up to.

    Advice to Management

Continue to lead the industry with the best floor finish products and the rest will take care of itself.

I have been working at Hillyard full-time

    Pros

Hillyard sales reps are equipped with several unique selling advantages. These advantages mostly center around computer technology and several key Hillyard products. They're designed to help the rep avoid selling just on price and lets him/her bring more to the table than other jan/san distributors (especially the smaller ones). Commissions are fair and managers treat you like a person. "What do I do for a living? I help companies keep their buildings hygienic and presentable and we place an emphasis on floor coatings."

    Cons

Many companies are trying to get into the industry, which is driving prices (margins) down and making it harder to make money. There's not much training before sending you out in the field. Mostly a sales industry, so most of the jobs at Hillyard branches are sales -- very little opportunity to move into other types of roles. "What do I do for a living? I... sell toilet paper."

    Advice to Management

Invest a little more time on training new employees. Help branch managers grow their leadership skills which will in turn help them better develop their branch employees, which is healthy for the company.

I have been working at Hillyard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Management is very fair. I like the fact it's not that up tight corporate atmosphere and not a lot of unnecessary reports to turn in.

    Cons

No car package!! You pay for your own gas.

    Advice to Management

Come up with some sort of car reimbursemet.

I have been working at Hillyard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly, family type atmosphere. GM and people in charge are approachable and remember who you are.

    Cons

Some spoiled employees at corporate level, Branch level salesman and customers try to blame or transfer blame, not accountable since they generate business. Unrealistic goals.

    Advice to Management

Understand overworked people, that are not salespeople.

  9. A good family owned business that has been in the industry for over 100 years.

    Pros

Great training on products. Consultive selling. Value added sales process. Manufacture and distribute their own products. Not reselling someone else's products.

    Cons

No cell phone allowance. No expense account or advertising budget for sales reps. No car or mileage allowance. They do not have their own laundry chemical program.

    Advice to Management

Put your sales staff at the top of the list. Focus on the customers and the sales will come. Too much demand put on pushing promos instead of what is best for the customer.
