Pros
Hinshaw is like a family, generally supportive with a lot of people who make you feel like you're a valuable part of the organization.
Cons
Hinshaw is like a family, with some crazy uncles and inappropriate cousins, but the firm won't get rid of them because they're family.
Advice to Senior Management
The firm will never get where it wants to be if the capital partners don't learn to share.
Pros
I was at Hinshaw for several years. The training was good and most of my co-workers were good people. The office staff and other attorneys were dedicated, nice people.
Cons
The problems at Hinshaw lie at the top of the food chain. Senior management has lost touch with the company by growing too much and becoming power hungry. They have stripped capital from small outlying offices to make the Chicago office look more profitable. Hinshaw has desperately been looking to get bough out, but no one will ask it to the prom
Advice to Senior Management
Genuinely speak with your employees. Bring back the days when you at least pretended to care about the "little people" who truly ARE the firm. When I was in law school, it was an honor just to get an interview at Hinshaw. Now, its a second tier sweatshop
Pros
Rewarding experience working on broad range of cases. Work involves complex litigation where a team of attorneys are involved, and simpler matters where young attorneys are given more control.
Cons
Like any large firm there is sometimes a sense of being lost among the crowd, however overall the firm's mentor program and review process ensures that young attorneys receive necessary training, as well as positive feedback and constructive criticism.
Advice to Senior Management
None. I enjoy the work I am doing, and do not see any areas that require attention. The firm is headed in the right direction.
Pros
Depending on your goals -- fine for new associate; poor for experienced associate.
Cons
Working in small office is difficult because there is no opportunity to get variety of experience or variety of partners to work with. Working in large downtown office is problematic because you do not get opportunity to control your own files from start to finish. Partners are very protective of their work. Billable mentality is out of control
Advice to Senior Management
Give more opportunities to associates to develop their interests. Give more mentoring opportunities in the outlying offices.
