    I have been working at Hitachi Consulting full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Ideas and suggestions for process improvement are always welcome. Parent company (Hitachi Ltd) is committed to the growth of HCC through acquisitions that help round out our offerings. Local geo events help build community. Company puts an emphasis on local offices supporting charities. Work life balance is important. Benefits and company perks are great (discounts at client companies, nice offices, healthcare, time off, etc.)

    Cons

    Review process could be clearer on how one is rated among peers.

    Hitachi Consulting is a highly dysfunctional company with lack of integrated strategy on a regional or global basis.

    I have been working at Hitachi Consulting full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Untapped potential of Hitachi corporate in Japan, including the potential reach into many relevant industries.

    Cons

    There are many:
    - Significant lack of visionary management;
    - Strong focus on transactional sales and delivery;
    - Lack of SME depth;
    - Highly political and bureaucratic;
    - Poor teaming and little collaboration among and across the consulting service lines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I would not provide advice to current management. Instead, if able, I would replace most all of the senior U.S. executive staff with fresh, collaborative, innovative thinkers.

    I have been working at Hitachi Consulting as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

    You learn to dress up, send important looking reports (even if useless) every other day.

    Cons

    Very stratified, they take 75% of bill rate and only pass 25% to consultants. They try to be like Accenture but on the cheap so for this 75% margin consultants get terrible benefits and a lot of beauracracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Consultants are the ones making you the money. Your exploitation of them won't win you good will or last forever.

    Pros

    Small company feel with big company backing. Many opportunities to learn and you will receive full support of management to develop your skills. Provides many learning opportunities and reimbursement for training and certifications. Trust in managing your own time. Great place for college hires.

    Cons

    Still stuck in the old consulting mentality of stacking and KPIs. Although they have tried to make some changes in the annual review process, your career growth is still tied to how well the team you are on performs. That means that you can be an outstanding performer, but if you are part of a small team or a team that does not generate much revenue, your career will stall once you are considered a "Manager".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    When you hear numerous complaints about specific consultants, perhaps it's time to think about getting rid of them. Don't wait for them to leave. Do not promote or bring on consultants at a higher level than they should be. This results in frustration from the other consultants as well as poor delivery with the customers.

    Pros

    For the technical people, there seem to be great opportunities to advance.

    Cons

    At a huge company, figuring out the rules with legal is a slow and scary prospect

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Require management to welcome ALL people from a new acquitision. Seemed like they were NOT open to learning anything from the experience of the people they acquired.

    Pros

    Good PTO, especially around Christmas-New Year's. If you don't prefer travel, management tries to find you local opportunities, however, travel is definitely part of the job. Good community presence, and college hiring program. Consulting Core program exposes new-grad hires to a variety of projects and technologies, so really good entry-level career.

    Cons

    Leadership is stretched too thin to be able to focus on what the employees need. Lack of technical leadership due to turnover, so if you're in the technology practice, that should be a major career concern (but maybe this is the case only in my practice). Parent company (Hitachi Ltd.) imposes very challenging targets on the consulting group (Hitachi Consulting), so leadership is always busy chasing targets, losing sight of how to grow the practice, improving delivery quality and preventing turnover. Bonus is irregular, and compensation adjustment is not great, even when promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on growing the practice organically by providing better training options, and empowering your consultants. Do more to prevent turnover, especially your quality employees and those with potential, or you risk becoming another mediocre consulting firm with a revolving door.

    Pros

    Great entrepreneurial environment. The people are wonderful and the opportunities are limitless. The company has allowed for wonderful personal growth as you demonstrate the ability to deliver.

    Cons

    Has worked over the last few years to move up market and compete with larger consulting firms. Would like to see this happen faster and more consistently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to change model to get more traction with strategy.
