Good Hospital

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Hoag Memorial Hospital

ProsHigh Degree of Medical Technology, Good doctors and nurses, Good Community Support from volunteers and donors, Good Employee Benefits, people are nice to work with, on site child care cent

ConsGiven the environment in health care they are constantly looking for ways to cut back and this affects the way things are done. not their fault, just what's going on in the industry.

A slowly dying hospital

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Newport Beach, CA

I worked at Hoag Memorial Hospital full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat cafeteria food. Beautiful view. Clean facility.

ConsI worked there for 6 years. Started out great then the CEO pretty much drove the place into the ground. They pour millions into making the hospital "pretty" then quietly lay off hundreds of staff, force retirement, or cut their salary. The skeleton crew left is told to work "smarter not harder." Morale is AWFUL there. There are certain managers who bully like crazy, but because they will drive relentlessly towards the bottom $$ line they basically get away with murder. Choosing to leave the company was the best decision I ever made.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit throwing away money on "appearances" and appreciate the employees that you have-they can make or break you.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Not forward-thinking; CNO employs a punitive management style, truly does not like staff RNs and nurse managers/director

Staff RN (Current Employee)
Newport Beach, CA

I have been working at Hoag Memorial Hospital full-time for more than 10 years

ProsA lot of talented staff-RNs, PCAs, Unit Secretaries, the potential for being a great institution

ConsNursing leadership not very forward-thinking, CNO stuck in an 80's management style and is completely out of touch with the demands placed on nurses today, expresses mistrust of the nursing staff and has been heard to label the Hoag RNs as incompetent or worse. Mid-level nursing directors/managers are berated frequently with little positive feedback.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook closely at nursing management...no one excels in an environment of negativity and fear. Is this really the management model you want for the nurses you employ?

Politics, popularity and unethical management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Hoag Memorial Hospital full-time

ProsPlenty of cube space and nice facilities

ConsWhere do I start? Unethical management with leaders who can barely handle excel much less budgets. Reports that were meaningless or worse - skewed so much they were just props for the VP. Long hours, expected to work weekends, technically inept.

Advice to Senior ManagementDemand transparency in your reports. No bad news means bad news has been buried.

Great people, great facility, lacks transparency

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Hoag Memorial Hospital full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat people to work with.
Modern facility.

ConsThe compensation/benefits are less than other hospitals in the OC area. Many patients have a sense of entitlement because it's Newport Beach.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to be more open with their employees on the direction/changes the organization is planning.
