Hoag Memorial Hospital is generous to their employees

ProsFriendly work environment, state of the art equipment, great benefits, competitive salary, beautiful location in Newport Beach. HR is spectacular!

ConsThere has been a decrease in the work force due to the merger by of St. Joseph Heritage Health Care, which has lead to instability of positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementHelp to re-position and re-hire laid off staff, or provide a minimum of 3 months severance pay.

Not the Hoag you might be thinking of "Hoag Pride" has left the building

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsLocated in a great area, nice facilities, good benefits package, positive local support as a community non-profit hospital with good financial support.

ConsGood culture gone bad. Dysfunctional and destructive leadership style has taken over from the top down. Dysfunctional by talking the talk but not walking the walk. Destructive by dismantling a strong committed employee base person by person. HR eager to point out long term accruing benefits but the current directive seems to be to eliminate all long term employees regardless of contribution. What was a people centric culture (employee and customer experience focused) has been replaced by a fear based culture due to a lack of trust. Leadership style is to avoid communication. Employees who voice their concerns when given the opportunity are black listed.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember what made Hoag great and do it! Hoag went thru plenty of hard times. This is no different. The challenge is not what needs to be done, it's the HOW you do it. Be committed to the wonderful organization that Hoag is. Remember the roots of Hoag. Tough decisions? Take time to process the overall impact of your decisions. Quick mis-guided solutions can do more harm then good.

Great Experience. Great staff. Good Management.

    Anonymous (Current Employee)

ProsI've never been apart of a company where most everyone cares about you. The staff members there eventually treat you like family & you quickly hang out outside of work. I learned so many things about people & medicine in such a short amount of time. An overalls fantastic experience.

ConsManagement is a little different. For the most part everyone is very careing, but there a select few that are a bit difficult to deal with (which generally comes with every place you work at.)

One of the worse to work for. .

    Healthcare (Former Employee)
    Newport Beach, CA

ProsGreat location and food is ok.

ConsManagement sucks they don't know how to run a hospital. This is why there patient volumes have dropped dramatically.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of your employees.

You almost get what you put into it!

    Admitting Representative III (Current Employee)
    Newport Beach, CA

ProsAmazing Values. Good synergy with all working staff. Awesome benefits and educational reimbursement.

ConsCapped at 5 % annual pay raise. No one has ever actually obtained a 5% increase, they only deliver 3% no matter how hard you work to achieve it. There isn't much incentive to stay. Good luck with talking to upper management. As long as their charts & graphs look good to their higher ups and you do the job well, they will steer clear of you.

On another note: Occasionally, the medical staff will forget their job and have demands not related to admissions which we fulfill with a smile. (It's easy to be pointed out a scapegoat when you are not a needle pusher.) Med staff will give most impulsive reactions to anything they do not understand or if something simply is misplaced so our communication is always on the high road. Respect is created not earned in this environment so forcefully you will exude professionalism while backhanding and caressing in the same motion to those who swell their chests and stare down their nose at you. With out us no one gets paid.

Advice to Senior ManagementAsk your employees what they think. They are on the ground level observing on a live basis. They see things you do not see. They see things that they turn a blind eye to because in the end they would rather have a pleasant working experience with those around them rather than turn people in for petty things we all know isn't right anyways but it's not worth bringing it up... Having upper management listen to 3 other managers about whats going on is mostly misleading... Give out generous raises to those who brand Hoag the way it should be branded and who do their job everyday with a smile. Make your good people want to stay and not feel expendable. Weed out the brown nosers, the patients can see right through them.

Ability to grow and learn and improve your livelihood

    Anonymous (Current Employee)

ProsHoag develops and invests in their employees. Each individual has the ability to grow, learn new skills, gain certifications and specialized training. There is even tuition reimbursement available for any staff looking to excel. The expectations are clear. The staff care tremendously about the work they do. Sad to see so many mean comments because I don't think it is reflective of the real Hoag culture.

ConsAffordable care act has created chaos and turmoil for the hospital industry as a whole. This is a tougher industry to be in now.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue listening to staff and saying heartfelt thank yous in a genuine and meaningful way.

    Job Eliminated

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Newport Beach, CA

ProsGreat location, beautiful interior and exterior. Great if you are a patient.

ConsThis company is very top heavy with Management and Leadership. They don't share the same views as upper Leadership and there are a lot of politics. Human Resources is hands-off in many ways and does not take ownership, everything falls to the Directors discretion. Each experience as an employee is different depending on the area they work in. There have been over 50 jobs eliminated within the last few months. It seems that people are losing their jobs every week.

Hoag Child Care needs new management. The staff are robots and do not show affection. Lacks curriculum.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen hiring new staff ensure they are qualified instead of putting so much weight on their education. It seems that their is so much qualified staff that understand what the needs of the departments are but an outside person comes in with a higher education but no experience. The staff are then training Leadership to do their job. Listen to the staff not their Managers.

    Management without a clue!!!

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFor newcomers they entice you to come aboard and join the team with incentives (training, great place to work, and great pay w/ benefits).

ConsManagement is disconnected from the real people that work hard, dedicate their time, and energy. If you're looking for a horrible work environment where layoffs occur every 2-3 years then apply here. If you're looking to become stagnant with your career path then Hoag Hospital is the place for you! If you have no work experience and you love to become a micro-manager that's egotistical, power-hungry, and unfair to your staff then you'll fit right in with "upper management."

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your staff, train them, advise your staff and coach your employees to strive for greatness. Don't hold good employees back. You should listen to them. All of the great staff that has come and gone has taken all of the knowledge with them and that diminishes the value of a once "great places to work"!
