    Pros

I've never been apart of a company where most everyone cares about you. The staff members there eventually treat you like family & you quickly hang out outside of work. I learned so many things about people & medicine in such a short amount of time. An overalls fantastic experience.

    Cons

Management is a little different. For the most part everyone is very careing, but there a select few that are a bit difficult to deal with (which generally comes with every place you work at.)

    Pros

Great location and food is ok.

    Cons

Management sucks they don't know how to run a hospital. This is why there patient volumes have dropped dramatically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Amazing Values. Good synergy with all working staff. Awesome benefits and educational reimbursement.

    Cons

Capped at 5 % annual pay raise. No one has ever actually obtained a 5% increase, they only deliver 3% no matter how hard you work to achieve it. There isn't much incentive to stay. Good luck with talking to upper management. As long as their charts & graphs look good to their higher ups and you do the job well, they will steer clear of you.

On another note: Occasionally, the medical staff will forget their job and have demands not related to admissions which we fulfill with a smile. (It's easy to be pointed out a scapegoat when you are not a needle pusher.) Med staff will give most impulsive reactions to anything they do not understand or if something simply is misplaced so our communication is always on the high road. Respect is created not earned in this environment so forcefully you will exude professionalism while backhanding and caressing in the same motion to those who swell their chests and stare down their nose at you. With out us no one gets paid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask your employees what they think. They are on the ground level observing on a live basis. They see things you do not see. They see things that they turn a blind eye to because in the end they would rather have a pleasant working experience with those around them rather than turn people in for petty things we all know isn't right anyways but it's not worth bringing it up... Having upper management listen to 3 other managers about whats going on is mostly misleading... Give out generous raises to those who brand Hoag the way it should be branded and who do their job everyday with a smile. Make your good people want to stay and not feel expendable. Weed out the brown nosers, the patients can see right through them.

    Pros

Great location, beautiful interior and exterior. Great if you are a patient.

    Cons

This company is very top heavy with Management and Leadership. They don't share the same views as upper Leadership and there are a lot of politics. Human Resources is hands-off in many ways and does not take ownership, everything falls to the Directors discretion. Each experience as an employee is different depending on the area they work in. There have been over 50 jobs eliminated within the last few months. It seems that people are losing their jobs every week.

Hoag Child Care needs new management. The staff are robots and do not show affection. Lacks curriculum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When hiring new staff ensure they are qualified instead of putting so much weight on their education. It seems that their is so much qualified staff that understand what the needs of the departments are but an outside person comes in with a higher education but no experience. The staff are then training Leadership to do their job. Listen to the staff not their Managers.

    Pros

Hoag develops and invests in their employees. Each individual has the ability to grow, learn new skills, gain certifications and specialized training. There is even tuition reimbursement available for any staff looking to excel. The expectations are clear. The staff care tremendously about the work they do. Sad to see so many mean comments because I don't think it is reflective of the real Hoag culture.

    Cons

Affordable care act has created chaos and turmoil for the hospital industry as a whole. This is a tougher industry to be in now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue listening to staff and saying heartfelt thank yous in a genuine and meaningful way.

    Pros

Love the people I work with, most are great at what they do. As others have stated - great place if you're a patient, you receive great care. Fantastic service from what I've seen as far as patient and visitor care.

    Cons

Not very supportive of their nursing staff; RNs, PCAs or any of the support staff. Management appears to be searching for ways to cut the budget and instead of looking at themselves, they are looking at the lowest paid employees and wanting to cut their hours. Pay is not on par with what I expected out of this 'great' hospital. Not as much training or education as I expected from this 'great' place. Classes are available but it's difficult to get into them and still work your scheduled hours. Middle management on our unit is clueless about how difficult it can be to function as a floor/staff nurse when you don't have the tools or support staff to provide the exceptional patient care that we are expected to provide. Less PCAs=more patient falls and LESS patient satisfaction - try to remember that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not as much training or education as I expected from this 'great' place. While there are classes available, staff are often unable to take time off or schedule courses due to scheduling. Very little hands on training on my unit though we have an 'educator' we only receive emails, no actual in person training nor in-service opportunities. Middle management on our unit is clueless about how difficult it can be to function as a floor/staff nurse when you don't have the tools or support staff to provide the exceptional patient care that we are expected to provide. Less PCAs=more patient falls and LESS patient satisfaction - try to remember that.

    Pros

High level of care provided, high acuity patients, plenty of opportunities to learn and grow within your field, decent to good level pay, Care provided is modern and up to date.

    Cons

High stressed staff, low work force morale, micromanagement from almost every level of supervision, majority of staff scared of job security due to strict scrutiny and favoritism among supervisors, staff has a culture of throwing each other "under the bus" in order for them to get ahead or keep their jobs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decrease the micromanagement and stress level of the staff, try and change the culture of favoritism among supervisors, make your staff feel secure in their jobs and you will see improved efficiency and morale

    Pros

Working with latest and greatest technologies, being in IT that's a major plus. Friendly co-workers and teams, excellent location, luxury setting. It's evident the money made here goes back in to the hospital - remodeling, new construction, etc. Good food in cafeteria (major plus for any hospital). Got to be a patient one time (unfortunately) and could not have asked for a better experience.

    Cons

Politics like anywhere else. Hard to get something done unless you or your manager are high up the food chain. Documentation and process overkill. Furlough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop laying off valuable employees.

    Pros

The best teamwork among nurses & top notch doctors.

    Cons

The culture definitely changed & not for the better from the last 7 years. Management is very punitive & very threatening. Compensation doesn't measure up to other facilities, no pension plans but management wants you to believe otherwise. I see efficiency & delivery of care changing because of too many inexperience nurses in the pool.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value and appreciate your experience staff.

    Pros

For newcomers they entice you to come aboard and join the team with incentives (training, great place to work, and great pay w/ benefits).

    Cons

Management is disconnected from the real people that work hard, dedicate their time, and energy. If you're looking for a horrible work environment where layoffs occur every 2-3 years then apply here. If you're looking to become stagnant with your career path then Hoag Hospital is the place for you! If you have no work experience and you love to become a micro-manager that's egotistical, power-hungry, and unfair to your staff then you'll fit right in with "upper management."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your staff, train them, advise your staff and coach your employees to strive for greatness. Don't hold good employees back. You should listen to them. All of the great staff that has come and gone has taken all of the knowledge with them and that diminishes the value of a once "great places to work"!
