Decent first experience as a psychologist in training, challenging population and long hours, but satisfying work

I have been working at Hofstra University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The staff is largely warm and understanding, supervision is good, the types of psychological illnesses and challenges you get to work with are varied. Hofstra's Student Counseling Services is one of the better university clinics in the NYC area in terms of breadth and quality of experience. You'll really be able to rack up a ton of hours here before applying to internships.

    Cons

There are really only 2 rooms available for therapy and many times you may not even get one of the two rooms so you may find yourself scrambling to sign out a room somewhere in the building from another training clinic while you have a client waiting in the waiting room. They say the externship is supposed to be 20hrs/week but I know I worked at least 3-4hrs extra in addition to those hours. Scheduling clients is a big problem because you'll find yourself without enough time in a day to do all the things you're supposed to do between individual therapy appointments, consultations, intakes, re-intakes, group therapy, individual and group supervision and tabling for different Student Counseling events. Most clinical psychology externships around NY don't even pay, so you're really working for them for free but at least this place pays about $7800/year. But considering how much work and effort you put into this job, the salary is really nothing. Oh and also you'll be on phone duty a lot, taking messages, transferring calls and swiping credit cards. The student aides that help out in the evenings are good but the secretary although she's been there with these folks for over 20 years has no idea what she's doing. God forbid you drop a call or screw up a transfer. One of the senior staff members actually has their family call the counseling center to get to them instead of their cell phone, just saying. Then there's not enough laptops for all the externs to work on and space is kind of a problem. in between seeing clients you spend time in this place called the break room which is basically a tiny storage area that has a bunch of file cabinets, books and a refrigerator. They've thrown a couple of chairs in there and a laptop and that's where you get to spend your free time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would advice the upper management at Student Counseling to replace their present secretary with someone that is actually receptive, capable of learning and understanding new things. This place looks like it's stuck in the 1950's. Take into consideration the fact that at least some of the externs are over worked and under appreciated. And buy cell phones so we don't have to take calls from your family while we've got progress notes and intake reports to write. I could really go on and on but look at the cons to get an idea of what needs improvement.

I worked at Hofstra University full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people I worked with were top notch, great people and real team players. The team really pulled together to get big projects completed and birthdays, holidays and other special events were routinely celebrated with the staff making it their own and taking it to the next level. Just a great group of people to work with period!

Many were Hofstra alumni. truly loved the school and went the extra mile in spite of relatively low pay for what they did.

    Cons

Paying almost $5K a year pre-tax for benefits. Empire and Delta Dental were offered and were top notch coverage, but the cost was steep. Further, the salary and no paid sick leave made it a touch pill to swallow, especially after coming from a private university in the city.

Further, you had to work weekends for events and be there at 7AM.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I never once met the President of the University and understand he is very reserved. It would have been nice to meet him and other senior management at some point. Offer paid sick leave and enough with the required weekends.

I have been working at Hofstra University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The job has very flexible hours, and taking days off at short notice is okay. Good time off policies allowing for flexilibtiy and enough time to enjoy the vacation. Free college courses is a huge perk for all full-time employees.

    Cons

    Huge bureaucracy
    Slow to change
Not great pay for the amount of work some people do.
There's a definite old-boy's club, some of which are women, that refuse to acknowledge that some of their ideas are outdated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some departments get paid too little (always a complaint, I know)
Make sure you appreciate all employees, not just the higher-ups
