I worked at Hofstra University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people I worked with were top notch, great people and real team players. The team really pulled together to get big projects completed and birthdays, holidays and other special events were routinely celebrated with the staff making it their own and taking it to the next level. Just a great group of people to work with period!

Many were Hofstra alumni. truly loved the school and went the extra mile in spite of relatively low pay for what they did.

    Cons

Paying almost $5K a year pre-tax for benefits. Empire and Delta Dental were offered and were top notch coverage, but the cost was steep. Further, the salary and no paid sick leave made it a touch pill to swallow, especially after coming from a private university in the city.

Further, you had to work weekends for events and be there at 7AM.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I never once met the President of the University and understand he is very reserved. It would have been nice to meet him and other senior management at some point. Offer paid sick leave and enough with the required weekends.

I have been working at Hofstra University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The job has very flexible hours, and taking days off at short notice is okay. Good time off policies allowing for flexilibtiy and enough time to enjoy the vacation. Free college courses is a huge perk for all full-time employees.

    Cons

    Huge bureaucracy
    Slow to change
Not great pay for the amount of work some people do.
There's a definite old-boy's club, some of which are women, that refuse to acknowledge that some of their ideas are outdated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some departments get paid too little (always a complaint, I know)
Make sure you appreciate all employees, not just the higher-ups

    I worked at Hofstra University

    Pros

Being part of an intellectual community like that at the University is like no other experience one can have. You'll learn so much on the job that you'll wonder why you didn't apply sooner.

    Cons

*Campus is very large, and has the potential to be a little impersonal, but the ideal candidate for a position there should be able to handle it without a problem, so long as they are relatively outgoing.

I have been working at Hofstra University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Hofstra is a melting pot for students, administrators, and faculty from all different walks of life. With 140 different major programs for students to choose from, employees interact with a plethora of different experiences on a daily basis. This free exchange of knowledge and ideas make the University an exceptional environment to foster creative thinking and innovation for all individuals.

    Cons

Low compensation rate for Graduate Assistants (highest annual stipend amounts to $2,000)
Student employees paid federal minimum wage, low chance for increasing that salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on graduate student opportunities. Undergraduates seem to get a lot more attention than those higher educational opportunities, which will be especially imperative if Hofstra ever plans to compete with schools such as NYU and Columbia.

Has been a decent experience. However, there are definite changes that the school should look into.

I have been working at Hofstra University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Great benefits- especially vacation days
    Nice office space
    Flexible schedule

    Cons

Oftentimes institution has a reactive instead of proactive approach to things

Feel like the institution is run like a business instead of an institution of learning

Culture is very interesting- people trying to one up each other all the time and a lot of gossiping

Pay and raises could definitely improve- very low

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have conversation more with administrators that talk to students before making changes to policies. Will get a good view of what students want. Also change the culture of the school. Students feel that the school is just a business out to get their money producing dissatisfied alumni. Revisit policies and procedures and make sure they make sense for the students.
