    Pros

Department worked together for the same purpose. Staff helped on another.

    Cons

Company has values & integrity for the most part. Continued consolidation of jobs and adding responsibilities to remaining staff creates stressed & overworked staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mission statement wants employees to have work-life balance, yet some departments are overworked and don't replace staff when they leave.

    Pros

For the low-level jobs, they train you to use the systems and help you learn what you need. They will also coach you when you need assistance. There is some opportunity to move to other positions outside of reservations, but most other departments want you to have other internal experience first before considering you. It is a nice Catch-22.

    Cons

This is an old company and is almost incapable of making positive changes that would positively effect the company and employees. Some departments are run on fear (this apparently is encouraged by some of the upper management). It is very old school and it shows in the way they run the business as a whole. Honestly, the company is run very militaristically. It is sad in this day and age.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach: "Team together, team apart". Instead of fostering an "us vs them" culture, try actually following up with one of the many, many, many surveys we took - make some hard decisions, venture out into scary territory and work WITH the low level employees. Trust me when I tell you they are not happy.

    Cons

Bad management + bad culture. Management don't know how to treat and respect employees. Management intimidates employees.

    Pros

Most people are smart and genuinely love what they do and constantly strive to help others, and do whats best for the company.

    Cons

Very old school traditional company. Very formal work-place atmosphere. Frequent incidents of nepotism vs. hiring from within, or the best & brightest externally. Has a VERY outdated dress code policy. They say it's business casual, but suits are the norm for all levels except Phone Agents and IT. Vacation/PTO policy is archaic and the company BARELY recognizes holidays. (i.e. Most similarly sized corporations recognize Thanksgiving and the day after thanksgiving, or New Years eve and New Years day where HAL doesn't, and expects you to use your limited vacation days or work. Fair enough but this can be an unexpected paradigm shift if you're arriving from another company. On-site cafeteria is awful and there are no other walkable alternatives. There is no onsite parking. There are a couple lots that employees can sign up for a space, but the spots are very limited, and there is a very long waiting list. Those on the waiting list and contractors are limited to street and other high-priced pay lots in a very congested neighborhood. Bus service to building is limited. Tends to higher contractors instead of investing in personnel, the high turn over can making working with some groups difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management touts HAL values and ethics, but seems like PR lip-service. Relax dress code for non-client facing positions. Very senior management tends to lock themselves away in the Executive Suite. Come out of your "ivory tower" and associate with the commoners.

    Pros

You get to travel for free all over the world. Depending on your job you may get a fair amount of time in port. Flights to and from the ship are free for employees and contract end/beginning. Also you will meet people/crew from all over the world and learn valuable lessons about cultural diversity and how to work with all different types of people/religions/customs!

    Cons

There is naturally high turn over in this tourism/travel industry onboard the ships, so the company has very little incentive to give you a raise, or comply with requests for time off. They will ask you to drop everything in your life to get to a ship tomorrow, but then won't necessarily return the favor when you make requests. As long as you know this going in and don't bend over backward for this company becuase you think you are building loyalty, then just enjoy the perks and have fun! Also when you are on a ship you are away from your life at home on land.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More communication between land based people and ship based people.

    Pros

Work life balance is often fine with make busy work running resulting in our team working over time at developing and guiding the sr. Project manager. Workload is driven from team along with priorities out to the business. Pay checks are regular and vacation days make life enjoyable.

    Cons

Sr. project manager and sr. Management from directors down are completely and unconditionally rude towards staff on assignments or work load. They tell you how long it should take you to finish your job, from troubleshooting to installation. Blame game is rapid fire accross teams and departments where whoever tells the first lie is believed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of your middle management thus cleaning out the good old boy network. You have managers who twist situations and point fingers rather than owning the problem. When it's a possitive thing they take the credit leaving you clueless about the results. Let the team work smarter as we are the ones who make things work.

    Pros

Traveling the globe, constantly evolving tourism industry, always challenges that are typically manageable. I have worked my way up from a seagoing musician to running my own program in the corporate office. If you are hard working and have the right attitude you will make it far as there are always opportunities for upward movement & professional growth.

    Cons

NOT a forward thinking company. Stuck in the dark ages on technology and mindset. Politics are in every work environment but Holland America seems to be particularly bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pull this company into the 21 century with technology, office amenities, work spaces, etc.
