Great job at sea, need more time off

Manager (Former Employee)
Seattle, WA

I worked at Holland America full-time for more than 3 years

ProsExcellent learning opportunities in a luxury hotel resort at sea. Great travel opportunities and very diverse international teams.

ConsLong contracts with time-off often shortened with little notice. Need more recognition from management in corporate office and better compensation structure.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great people, wimpy management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Seattle, WA

I have been working at Holland America full-time for more than 5 years

ProsDecent vacation benefits, not always a hectic work environment, investments in technology to do your job. Office culture is laid back and there are discounts on cruises.

ConsWimpy management, a culture of fear about taking risks - even if it's a blatantly obvious correct course of action. No strategic thinking *anywhere* in the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementCan the CIO and watch what your technology department can REALLY do if there's a bold leader a the helm.

Big Mistake

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Seattle, WA

I have been working at Holland America full-time for less than a year

ProsWell, the company gives away a bunch of gifts (including travel) during the holidays, raffle style. Not much beyond that.

Cons* Incompetent IT "Leadership"
* No focus on innovation
* Incredibly difficult to get funding for anything
* Pay is not very good (definitely below industry standard)
* Office politics
* Very little work-life balance
* Very tight with time-off benefits
* Very rigid and stuffy culture
* Ivory tower leadership

I could go on and on...but, I think you get the point...

Advice to Senior ManagementRetire. Bring in more agile and innovative thinking leaders.

Fun to travel, bad management

DJ/MC (Former Employee)
Seattle, WA

I worked at Holland America as a contractor for more than a year

ProsGreat to travel, the work is not difficult if you are an English speaking crew member. You get ample time to explore port and basically ALL expenses are paid. My biggest expense was buying the ships super slow internet. Because of that, pay is decent, making it easy to save money while at sea.

ConsThe guests can be elderly and require a lot of extra attention, just be prepared for that. Like most large corporations, the management on ship was poor. Lots of double standards and broken promises to employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop re-hiring managers you have previously fired

Hidden values

MANAGER (Current Employee)
Seattle, WA

I have been working at Holland America full-time for more than 10 years

ProsTravel, exposure to mutliple cultures, multiple ethnicities - in a positive way.

Consthe cons are in some ways a benefit - hidebound, but you always have safety mechanisms that are redundant to extremes, tends to be very male oriented, but intolerant of harrassments of any type.

Advice to Senior ManagementSometimes consensus can be harmful - if you only get the people who want to please you to answer you.

Holland America has gone downhill.........

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Seattle, WA

I worked at Holland America full-time for more than 5 years

ProsBenefits, free/reduced cruise opportunities, co-workers

Cons2nd floor support departments are worked to death. My manager kissed up to her higher ups and was therefore allowed to treat her staff however she wished (hence the reason for me quitting after 5+ years). Lack of Human Resources support. Lack of follow-through unless it was something that benefited management.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of your employees. There are people working there that have put their heart and soul into that company and you're chewing them up and spitting them out.

Photographer on Holland America cruise ships

Photographer (Former Employee)
Seattle, WA

I worked at Holland America as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsQuite laid back position compared to other cruise lines/cruises, related to the average age of passengers.

ConsHAL hierarchy system I haven't found very appealing (sharp line between status: officer/staff/crew)

Advice to Senior ManagementShould be paying more attention on injustice towards ship crew... this review I wouldn't have done if more attention has been paid to my case
