I have been working at Holland part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Decent pay
    Easy work physically speaking

    Cons

Working conditions are unsafe, working the night/outbound shift there would be dozens of forklifts flying around a mid to small sized dock where no one was watching where they were going or just assume you'll move. In the winter when I worked there for the few months I worked there, there was no heating, and no warning from management when hired to come prepared to work 8 or more hours straight without stopping. Its a miracle no one gets frostbite.

Pay is docked 15% due to a union or company deal with workers.

Casuals are treated like dirt by drivers.

Management is horrible outside a few exceptions.

Entire work environment is archaic with common phrases thrown about that its a "Mans Job" and things of that nature. Facility was falling apart, equipment including forklifts in even worse shape. Most forklifts didn't even have rear view mirrors, some were so old the were hard to stop.

Management could care less about your families needs, no exceptions, show up or else sort of stuff.

Breaks were non existent. Lunches a measly 30 min. And no stopping until outbound was "closed". End result being a shift started at 6pm and first stop for break or lunch came at midnight or even as late as 1:30 some times. Out bounds job is basically over after all trucks are off, then lunch, then its esentialy screw off time till 2:30 being given BS jobs to run out the clock.

Training is pathetic, with no formalized regimen . Follow so random worker around and absorb what you can for a few days. Given a short video to watch on safety then a short test where answers are handed to you if you can't figure it out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Massive overhaul of company from ground up, including facilities.

I have been working at Holland full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Home every weekend, motels every day away from home.pay is good

    Cons

Not well organized. Don't give you all the information you need to do the job. You have to learn about the paperwork on your own or get it from asking other drivers. They hire too many people then you sit at home and they tell you that the freight has slowed down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put together an orientation program that will allow the new drivers to be informed of all the information that will be needed to do the job. Not just some safety and hr points.

I have been working at Holland full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay (time and one half paid after 8 hours). Good benefits (Health, dental, eye care, and prescription drug coverage provided at no additional cost, co-pay required on doctor visits. )

    Cons

Since the company was acquired by YRC Worldwide, the decisions coming from upper management don't seem to make much sense. Also, the parent company (YRC Worldwide) over extended themselves financially while acquiring Holland and several other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to constructive criticism from your employees, most of them want to help the company improve.

    Cons

Everything......... long hrs. no break, no set time that your shift will end

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time training your employees, and give all of the job facts up front. Don't hire someone just b/c you need the position filled.

I have been working at Holland full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great. Medical, dental, and vision for my entire family costs less than my previous job where I made less money and the benefits at Holland are better. Pay is competitive for the industry. Room for advancement.

    Cons

The company as a whole has a serous lack of training. No tuition reimbursement is offered. Most advancement opportunities require relocation. Hours are often non-traditional and are based on company needs, not much flexibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your people. Proper training can make all the difference. It is better to train up front and spend the few extra dollars it takes to get it right than have to constantly hire new people.
