Pros
Great customers, great employees, fun place to work.
Cons
Instability of company work, lack of advancement.
Advice to Senior Management
Branch out, Other business opportunity.
Pros
The free rentals are obviously the best reason to work at Hollywood Video. Sometimes I would watch up to 15 movies a week.
Cons
The pay was pretty low at 5.75. That's currently below the minimum wage now. I didn't receive a 3 month raise either.
Advice to Senior Management
The video rental business is going downhill at a quick pace. There needs to be a new focus for the company.
Pros
If you like working with people and are a movie buff, it is a great place to work.
Cons
Overall, the company did not treat employees well.

Pros
Great retailer with some unqiue points of view on how the video game business should be
Cons
Upper management clearly doesnt have a good line of communication going. They often do one thing only to change it the next day. Some of the stores are too close together which cannabalizes sales from the other stores.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on communication and consistent direction to the field in everything you do. Think carefully about decisions and dont make knee jerk reactions
Pros
Great chance to meet customers and develop interpersonal skills amongst a team and customer base. If you love movies then you will feel right at home with recommendations and reviews given out to others from your personal knowledge.
Cons
Bad company structure, continuously restructured at management level. Poor ability to market itself as a brand. Inability to adhere to the times changing in technology innovation in the video market.
Advice to Senior Management
There is not much advice I can offer now that the company is closing and in shambles. I would offer that management take the time, for the future, to recognize those at lower levels that perform week in and week out. Even a monthly call to offer praise. Too many times do companies focus on the negative and take any time to give kudos to those who are performing above their set expectations.
Pros
Enthusiast based products.
Fun at times.
Get to interact with people "into" what you sell.
Manager gets a fair amount of freedom in running their store.
Cons
Low-ish pay.
Corporate indecision basically destroyed company.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't screw up whatever companies you end up at next, kk? Maybe pick a direction and commit to it? Watch consumer trends and react to them? Advertise a bit? Spend a little money making the place look up to date and cared for, not like we're pushing product from the mid 90's.
Pros
Got to work with video games and movies... cool subject matter. Beyond that, it was pretty low stress, and I was able to do homework during slow times.
Cons
Lowest pay possible, manager was hardly ever there, just smoked in the back the whole time. The security device was just for show, and we had a theft of an employee's purse at one point.
Advice to Senior Management
I think Hollywood Video is going out of business, and they failed to get in on the kiosk/online rental business before it was too late.
Pros
Hollywood Video (Movie Gallery and Game Crazy included) was once a fantastic place to work, with top line talent. Plenty of growth opportunity (personal and professional) and excellent working conditions.
Cons
Upper management following the merger with Movie Gallery continued to make flawed decisions following flawed decisions. They never truly grasped what the difference between what works in rural markets and metro markets was. And with Game Crazy, the choices made to neuter the abilities of the organization to develop, ultimately led to their inevitable end.
