Nice Place To Work, But Be Aware of Financial Problems

I worked at Holston Medical Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Lots of good medical professionals; they are high on innovation; have been quick to adapt to the performance and data-driven needs of modern healthcare. Their IT department is exceptional.

    Cons

They have had financial difficulties this past year. They first cancelled direct deposit, then they cut everyone's pay by 10% (most had to take one unpaid day off per pay period, they called it "furlough"), they stopped matching 401K contributions, and cut HSA contributions in half. They laid off several at the beginning of the year and they haven't replaced most of the people who have quit since this started. This has gone of for over a year, but was supposed to be a temporary issue

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They tout "doctor-owner, doctor-operated", but they really need some professional management. Even if they had professional management, the feeling is that the doctors would interfere.

HMG is a very disorganized and frustrating place to work.

    Pros

There is very few and far between when you'll have to work overtime. Your hours stay very consistent and you get 50% off of your medical services.

    Cons

When you employ peanuts you employ monkeys! There is very little opportunity for upward mobility. The majority of the jobs within HMG are designed for quick turn-over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

First and foremost employ people with the credentials necessary to do the task that is expected of them, secondly offer some type of incentive to encourage people to stay with the company. Offer training for those who are looking for the opportunity to move ahead.

    Pros

Most of the employees are nice. Jerry Miller (President) was very nice to deal with. They have locations pretty much all over the tri-cities, so if you are a medical person, there's a good chance you won't have to drive too far to work.

    Cons

Doctors run the show, and apparently they all think they should be in charge. Be prepared to bombarded from all sides be every MD in the organization with whatever they think is most important right that second. On the plus side, if you ignore them, they tend to forget that they cared. Learn to fake being panicked by them, they tend to feel better if they think you're scared of them for some reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slap down all the partial owners.

    Pros

I honestly can't think of any pros to working for HMG other than it was a job and I got paid.

    Cons

    No advancement.
    Unfair hiring practices.
Filling jobs before they were posted for employees to even be considered.
    No communication from management.
