I have been working at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Great relaxed company culture where everyone is trying their best. Great tax practice. Get to work with a lot of different types of clients.

    Cons

Might need to improve in the IT system but overall managers and the company are doing great things.

I worked at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Overtime pay was great but it ends as soon as you make manager.
They will promote you fast if you are at least a decent performer.
    Good benefits.

    Cons

    Don't expect any work-life balance.
You receive a pay cut when you make manager (I know several people with the same experience).
Partners are quick to steal credit and not give you a bonus for new clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increased responsibility should always follow with commensurate compensation. When you tell someone their compensation will not decrease when they make manager - then it does and they bring it to your attention - don't tell them there is nothing you can do to stick to your word because it is the "compensation committee's decision."

I worked at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

I was at the Pasadena Office and they had a very nice office with great amenities like an in-house little gym; the office itself is new and looks very professional; the office is casual dress daily; they had lots of snacks; they went out to lunch a lot; their technology is pretty up to date; the people are great even though most of them are tax. Great firm to work for.

    Cons

The audit practice is small at HCVT which limits the amount of exposure that you can have as an auditor. There is enough work for you but you will be limited based on the clients that they have and the managers that you will be assigned to. If working from the office most of time is your thing, then HCVT is great for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up to great work. Love HCVT.

    Pros

    Cons

I have been working at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Salary is good, yearly bonuses based on your billable hours paid in July, Most managers are easy to work with. Partners are good guys (Should have more women though). Long hours but dinner is served and fun to hangout with everyone.

    Cons

Technology is lacking, we seem to be wasting time on what the Partners need as opposed to streamlining processes. Upward evaluations are a waste of time. Training is not focused around technology to improve our lives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a process improvement specialist and improve IT support. Better training needed on software. In some cases I have overheard Partners say they don't care about the Firm only their clients which is a bit disconcerting.

Former Employee - Tax- Advanced Staff in Westlake Village, Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt

    Pros

Beginning pay is fair, even though less than ideal. Beautiful offices in a great location. Teaches object lesson in importance and value of due diligence in employment decisions.

    Cons

Disconnect of management from staff. Limited growth opportunities unless you are of the privileged and annointed few who have been blessed by partners and managers. Mindset of management toward staff is exclusively narrow in their focus. Opportunities for growth and development limited unless you belong to the selected group so appointed by partners and managers. Managers continuously look for opportunities to accuse staff for their sub standard knowledge and skills instead of accepting accountability. Hard work and effort goes unrecognized. Management is blatantly condescending and patronizing, subjective in their assessments with narrow mindsets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale matters. Change your condescending attitudes toward your employees, if you treat adults like 5-year old children, they will LEAVE.
