management is attentive to your needs evaluations are more merit based partners value their employees more more responsibilities = more learning

growing very fast, sometimes too fast would like to see the firm be more proactive vs. reactive

    Pros

Casual Environment Fun events, great coworkers Good trainings Flexible schedule Paid overtime Tons of free food Management typically takes time to make sure you understand the project/client you're working on. You have some say in what way your career heads. Not really any stressful budgets in the OC office. Management is willing to listen to your advice on improvements.

    Cons

Lots of OT (but paid 1.5x) throughout the year.

    Advice to Management

Keep on getting better and improving efficiencies.

I worked at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Get paid OT at 1.5. Great outlook. Receive promotions fast if you kiss up. Tuition reimbursement, CPA bonus.

    Cons

Although not big as the big four, politics are definitely like big four. Everyone above you acts like they own you. Training could be better. Almost have to be kissing up to the partners for continous promotions. Partners are from big four, that is why the culture at the firm is of the big four. The firm advertises "people" but really the people are all the same. The busy season could get really bad with the hours depending on your office location. Health insurance is terrible. PTO is very low for 1-5 year employees. Managers do not think for themselves and want staff to their job for them. There is an absence of communication, especially between 1-2 year staff and managers. Low salary but with OT equal out to market.

    Advice to Management

Managers needs to provide more guidance and don't let staff wander around for the answer. If a manager has an issue, they should discuss with the person first and see if they improve instead of giving a bad rating on evals. Managers need more communication training and the emphasis should be on "communication with staff".

I worked at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Several office locations, so you can live close to where you work.

    Cons

Poor training of new staff. Rude seniors and managers who don't help you grow. Unbearable busy season with an average of 70-80 hours a week. Work 7 days a week for about 5 to 6 months out of the year. Very high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better. Higher more staff so employees won't have to work so many hours. People need a better quality of life.

I have been working at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of free food Good Training Casual atmosphere Big clients Paid overtime Strong relationships with mentors Fun firm events and holidays

    Cons

Sometimes disorganized Sometimes training isn't very client specific and glosses over important practical details that you have to just figure out on your own As a new staff you may spend a lot of time without anything to do

    Advice to Management

Things are good for the most part; it'd be nice to always have something to do as a staff though

  7. Interview

    Pros

    HCVT is a growing firm

    Cons

No real personal connection from the recruiter

    Advice to Management

Go away from traditional interview techniques (behavior questions, situational questions) and more towards having a real conversation.

I worked at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Overtime pay was great but it ends as soon as you make manager. They will promote you fast if you are at least a decent performer. Good benefits.

    Cons

Don't expect any work-life balance. You receive a pay cut when you make manager (I know several people with the same experience). Partners are quick to steal credit and not give you a bonus for new clients.

    Advice to Management

Increased responsibility should always follow with commensurate compensation. When you tell someone their compensation will not decrease when they make manager - then it does and they bring it to your attention - don't tell them there is nothing you can do to stick to your word because it is the "compensation committee's decision."

lots of hours, work doesn't involve many industries

    Pros

pay overtime, promote people when they are ready instead of when an open position is open.

    Cons

lots of working hours, very top heavy so managers do a lot of staff work.

I have been working at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary is good, yearly bonuses based on your billable hours paid in July, Most managers are easy to work with. Partners are good guys (Should have more women though). Long hours but dinner is served and fun to hangout with everyone.

    Cons

Technology is lacking, we seem to be wasting time on what the Partners need as opposed to streamlining processes. Upward evaluations are a waste of time. Training is not focused around technology to improve our lives.

    Advice to Management

Hire a process improvement specialist and improve IT support. Better training needed on software. In some cases I have overheard Partners say they don't care about the Firm only their clients which is a bit disconcerting.
